I highly encourage those living in the people’s republic of California to look into Montana LLCs. Say goodbye to smog tests forever.

My point is that finding a non-friendly smog tech has become very difficult. I even had my indy take the car to HIS guy, that's been passing his work for years, no go. Once you fail, the system tracks you as having a failure which alerts the next guy.

I admit your solution does have merit. A kid I work with has a very modded/loud S2000 and passed no problem. He said the tech was stoned. Nice.
I agree with you, finding a friendly smog tech is difficult, but it's not impossible. I'm in east bay, we have a few smog guys here and we have a guy in the City. Always happy to help if you run into some problems. But if you know of a smog tech that will pass a modded S2K, that's your guy!

Searching that now...you can setup an LLC for $49.

Can you register a CA titled car to a Montana LLC, after the fact?

Yes. You essentially “sell” the car to your llc and are then issued a Montana title.

Sweet, thank you. I'm definitely going to do this. Tired of the smog woes every two years (and extra cost for help to get it done each year).

Appreciate the tip on this.

No problem. I’ve had great success with the $49 dollar llc company. It’s essentially a one time $500 fee per car. Montana has permanent registration for cars our age so it’s literally the last time you’ll ever pay registration on your car.

Just be be sure to call your insurance company and have the llc added as an also insured. And get you some real American plates.

The Republik of CA does not take kindly to your solution. Is your driver's license from CA? Questions can be raised if your are in an accident.........out of state car, CA driver, CA insurance

This is why it’s important to have your insurance company add your llc as an also insured and you should also ensure your insurance company is fully aware of what you are doing.

This is has been done for years by RV owners and exotic car owners. It works for me, it’s up for each individual to evaluate it for their own circumstances.

What is your info or experience to substantiate this claim? Thank you.

So you can have your LLC registered on the same personal policy with your other cars? Or you need to have a separate insurance policy, specific to your LLC?

The Montana thing is a great idea, and like you mentioned nbressette, has been used by exotic car owners for a long time. In their case it's primarily used to avoid paying taxes. From what I understand, there has been somewhat of a crackdown of this practice in certain parts of the country. I heard ATL was one of them.

I personally keep all of my cars registered in MN as I have a place there, and I keep my DL there also. It costs me about $100/car/year for registration and there is no emissions/inspection. But I do pay sales tax. I have lived in multiple states and have never had an issue getting pulled over or filing an insurance claim. As long as the insurance company knows where I live they haven't seemed to care too much about the other details.

On my personal policy the name of my llc is listed as an “also insured “.

Yea recently there was a big deal made about this but it all went away because as the current laws are written, its all totally legit. If I lived in CA still (or whaveer state with crazy testing) I would be all over this.
