Default Street/Track Pad

Hi everyone,

Is there any option that is reasonable for street and the occasional lapping day? Basically, something that I can get 5-10 laps on before they really start to fade, but also don't screech on the street. Or am I stuffed, and I just need to have two sets of pads?

My car is stock. 996tt with x50. May do exhaust/tune/suspension at some point, but not doing more than that.

My initial thought is to go with a Carbotech XP8, and see how that goes. I had the XP10's on my old car for the track. They were brilliant, but undriveable on the street.

Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.

EDIT - Also, if a set of dedicated track pads are needed, is it just the fronts, or would I need to do all the way around?

Thanks.

Some years ago, someone gave me a set of Porterfield R4S' for a car I was playing with; they worked exceptionally well, so well in fact I use them on my trucks too. I got 265,000kms out of the front rotors on my F450.

They do have a downside, when it's really cold, you have to get heat in them or they catch you off guard.

I don't know how many (or if anyone) still uses them for track purposes, but I found in autocross and spirited driving they worked very well, and not too messy.

Pagid blacks are a good compromise but not really a full on track pad.

The best I have found are PFC 11, work great on track and street but they do squeal.

I'd just like to find a good low-dust street pad. Akebono is my usual go-to, but they don't seem to make front pads for our cars (only rear).

Not looking for a full track pad. Definitely not willing to deal with squeal on usual driving.

Maybe even the OEM ones are ok. What are people using that go to the occasional track day, and how long do they last before the pedal turns to mush?

I'm occasionally stuck using oem Textar on the track and if I go nice and easy on them, I can make them survive 10 or so laps on my brake-heavy local track. If I actually drive at full pace, the pedal will go to mush within 3 braking zones.

How about Ferodo DS2500? I used them on my 993 in the rear and they never squeeled on the street. Not sure how they would be on the front though.

Both of you should consider Pagid Blacks.

They will squeal occasionally when they are stone cold, do a couple of aggressive stops and they are quiet.

You can add a thin line of this stuff to backing plates when installing, it stops the squealing completely. But it will burn off with heavy track use.

I never had squealing with Pagid blacks. Apex can fix you up.

I've always heard amazing stuff about Endless. Is it recommended to do similar rear pads, or could I leave them OEM?

I ran these about 8 years ago. They did not squeal and were a good street pad that performed well at the track at 7/10th. There is no substitute for dedicated street and track pads but If I had to run a dual use pad, the MX72 would be it. They are not cheap if I recall. A set of the front 6 pot and rears were about $900 if I recall.. Some of their track pads are upward of $2000+
