Like seemingly everything else both M1 0W-40 and 5W-50 are on back order, so I ordered some while the sale was on for delivery when available.

Got Mobil 1 5W-50 at NAPA today. New packaging but still Porsche A40.

Thousands of years underground and it goes bad after 5 years sealed in a plastic bottle. I don’t doubt the manufacture’s claim but wonder just what goes bad.

Umm that's millions of year...LOL. Shelf life of oil depends on a number of factors with respect to how it is stored. Exposure to the elements (e.g., air, moisture, contaminants, temperature fluctuations). In addition, there are additives added to most oils. Anything that might accelerate any chemical reactions can affect shelf life.

Help me out here. If it's fully synthetic is there any dino oil in it at all?

The base material of fully synthetic motor oil is almost always distilled crude oil.

Personal preference based on age (engine, not my age) and region I live (hot & humid).
There are many threads where it's debated 0w40 or 5w50 and in the end, it's what you're comfortable with and what feels right when you use it.
I've got high miles and combination with temperature region, I have no problems with 5w50.

Right, I expect the 'additives' in combination with the likely separation after sitting for years... Moisture content probably a factor like you mentioned as well.
AND MARKETING! They change their labels to keep products fresh, imagine seeing 3 generations of labels. The customer would be wondering which one to buy...

Consider olive (or any cooking) oil, they go sour often, and especially so when sitting above a stove where temperature fluctuates, so much.

Of course a week after I searched for NAPA's "deal" but then had to buy nine qt's at $9.00 per qt.
But who can't use another nine at that sale price? 5/50 becoming harder and harder to find. Especially "on sale".

Thanks for the headsup!

if you only bought it a week ago, you can probably go return them at the store... or walk in and ask for a price adjustment...

Too late for that as oil is now changed for summer. But a spare 9 qts can never be a bad thing!

I just cleaned out the local NAPA store. All 9 qt's they had I/S!

Just throwing this out there, FCPEuro has 100% return on all things, even the oil change kits. After you buy the first one, it costs like 40 bux shipping to send the oil and used parts back, then you get store credit for the next kit (which makes it free). You get the whole kit of Porsche parts and 2 5qt jugs of liqimoly for just shipping costs. I havent spent more than 40 bones on an oil change in years.

does that mean you run LiquiMoly oil? they seem to mostly have those for their oil kits
