Absolutely every thing that's different on the 996 turbo is more complicated than the 996 GT3. Having owned both, I liked the power of the turbo but wrenching on the GT3 was significantly easier.

I'll second the suggestion above for a 996 Carrera instead with an LSD and winter tires. Significantly more fun and cheaper, just budget tires. If you must have a 911 turbo, the 997 has a better AWD system for inclement weather.

Total pedantic side note, I believe an LSD was optional on the last 996 turbos with the X50. -totally from memory, and I could be wrong. I want to say something like 14 cars had this option in 2005.

Try a diesel Cayenne. Put some 18" wheels and BFG K2 T/A's on and make sure you get heated front and rear seats. Decent ride quality, everyone will be comfy and I doubt you'll run into many conditions that would keep you off the road.

Nice collection BTW.

Sold the 86 so now will get more serious about options. She drove a base cayenne and jr was not happy in the back seat, said it was too stiff. Used to the benz I think.

Thanks for all your input.

Does Cayenne have a different suspension option on any other models? Like my old M5, in comfort mode, smooth as glass, but press a button and it tightens up.

Yes, my GTS has air suspension. In sport, it's crazy how well it handles, in comfort it rides very nice. Interior is same as 991 911. It's a great truck.

All my BMW's with X-Drive are awesome in the snow.
If I added snow tires to replace the all-seasons they would be that much better.

Funny, our X3 M40i was ‘just OK’ in the snow, and then we realized our tires were summer only. So I’m looking to get a set of winters now.

So M Cars always come standard with Summer Tires. Your car is an animal.
Once you put the winters on it you'll see a big difference. Watch fir clearance issues but it really goes nice in the white.

I was surprised how capable these new M-ish cars are now. The old M-badged cars were just fakes. Badges all over, but no real M goodness. Well, not anymore. Our 2019 cold start is loud, exhaust has cracks and pops, round dials, tight steering. This engine is producing closer to 400HP, not the 355 it’s rated for.
