Chicago Winters: 996 or 997 turbo?
Morning,
Wife's GL is in for snow tires, and I just got yelled at driving my wife to the train in my 86 cab while its snowing. I have three g body cars all redone and 6gt3 and I'm told they aren't allowed to go out in the winter!. So I was thinking about a 996 or 997 turbo for the winter with snow tires. To be honest I don't drive very far, just often, shuttling my HS teenager to swim practice 2-4 times a day for a couple more years. These swimmers spend 4hr's+ a day in the pool!
General opinion on 996 or 997 turbo for Chicago suburban winters?
I appreciate your feedback, as I know most of you like me have ended up with many different 911's. Will post this in the 997tt forum as well.

Uh, neither? For a foul weather, carrying people and stuff around vehicle, why would you pick a 911? I'd much rather be bopping around in my wife's cayenne or my land cruiser in crappy weather, carrying people and stuff around

Not really a fan of suv's anymore, wife has a GL550 which is nice but sucks in the winter. My last winter was a Denali XL and that thing was incredible in snow, but I don't have to shuttle kids and hockey gear anymore hence trying to get away from another truck.
Always working on or restoring a 911 around here so I thought this would be a good option.

I'd just rather not be in a small sports car for a mid western winter. Bad roads with frost heaves and pot holes, plus low ground clearance don't make for a great combo for a sports car. Get a fun awd sports sedan instead if you don't want a SUV

stock 996tt with a LSD added and maybe awd deleted , 997 has better AWD and available LSD stock but more complicated/issues overall

I would go for an Audi S6 3.0 with a tune, it will be about as fast as a 996 Turbo, and far better in the snow. 455HP/395ftlb. A buddy has one.

I have a Macan S for the deep snow and skiing but I just put the snows on my 996 tt. I have driven my C4 all winter and now drive my turbo all winter until thge snow gets deep its a great and fun car in the winter!

Oh and as for salt just get an under car washer/sprayer for the garden hose and rinse it off!

Guys thanks for the quick feedback. Except for the Denali all of my big suv’s sucked in the snow, gl, range rover, q7. maybe i should have dedicated snow tires to them like my old 5 series.
The GL just got Pirelli snows and its snowing so we’ll try it out.

I'll add, I'd rather buy a cheap questionable C2 996 + LSD and budget for an engine rebuild, they're more nimble and fun and good fit powerwise for winter
