Default Transmission scrape downshifting to second gear

Hey guys, need some help with a problem. 2004 996 turbo, just tuned, new turbos, intercoolers, fuel system etc. Much more HP. Also have a 997 shifter that has been in the car for a couple of years. While they had it down, I decided to have the transmission fluid replaced. Now, it scrapes downshifting into 2nd gear anytime over 25 MPH. Any thoughts guys. Thanks in advance for your help. Rick

What do you mean by "scrapes?"

Is there any kind of additive that might help?

If it's only happening with 2nd gear I doubt that it's fluid related.

What year is the car?

If it was not grinding before the fluid change, then the new fluid may not be the right stuff. Supposedly the Porsche transmission oil is the best for the 996 Turbo transmissions. It is hard to find though.

2004 with 49000 miles. It ran great after Sam's tune and then this morning took it out that's when I started seeing the problem. 45 degrees. I ran for about 10 minutes. Wondered if the trans was not warmed up yet. Very respected shop say they used Porsche trans oil. Thanks guys

It’s strange that it just started. I wish I was there to listen to/feel it. It could be the second gear Syncros. Or sometimes if they are just maybe aging a little bit. It might need to warm up more and you’ll be OK because there’s fresh fluid. If they use the right stuff which it sounds like they did. Another good observation was if the clutch needs to be bled which means it’s not fully disengage and that’s why this is happening. Keep us updated.

Thanks Sam, if the clutch didn’t fully disengage, would it only do it in 2nd gear

I developed the same thing on my car shortly after I bought it. It wouldn't downshift 3rd to 2nd unless the car was almost still. No problems with any other gears. In the end I gave up and had a shop open the tranny and they said the synchros were worn. I hope you manage to fix it without opening the tranny.

I would try adjusting the shifter cables - wind them out a little - when I put the Numeric cables in my car,I had a similar issue as you have described, but as my tranny was brand new, I knew it wasn't the syncros.

You have a 997ssk, start there before pulling the box, it may be that simple.

Cheers,

Thanks for the info. I'm going to have the shop take a look after Thanksgiving.
