Default large leak 996 TT automatic

I have a 996 TT with the tiptonic. 2003 with 60,000 miles. I was going down the road yesterday, there was a dull single pop like a hose popped off and oil everywhere massive leak. I have put it up on my lift and found that the leak is between the engine and auto transmission between the engine and oil reservouir. I cannot see where. Does anyone out there know where it might be or what happened? I was just applying some power when it went. I shut it down quickly. Please help.

There is a crankcase ventilation hose from the top of the engine to the oil tank. For some reason these hoses fail on automatic cars only. It makes a huge mess. You will need to remove the engine or transmission to replace it.

Is it possible with removing just the reservoir and lowering the engine a bit? Pretty scared to remove the engine. Additionally, I cannot find and pics or readings about a turbo having a crank case ventilation hose?

Do you mean the two large hoses on top?

@CTS is a renowned engine builder and very familiar with these cars/engines. He said it's an engine out job, doubt he's lying.

I've never heard of this happening though, will be something I will be looking out for in the future and replacing when I drop the motor.

Most major servicing requires engine removal. The car was designed that way.

After 20 years the breather on the oil tank does tend to fail, Mine on my 02 X50 split and does make quite a mess and yes it was drive train out which then I just took the opportunity to take care of all the consumables and pin coolant lines so hopefully good for another 20 years

If you've got a lift you can pull the engine easily. I did it flat on my back a few times.

Your oil leak has to come from a line under pressure...The black rubber hoses are mostly breathers. There are two return lines under pressure. One from the crankcase scavange pump and one from the turbos (2) scavenge pumps. One line on the left of the tank and one on the right see pics.... If you are lucky only the fitting on the tank became loose???

Also take a good look at the accordeon feeding line at the bottom of the tank to see if it is not crack or leaking from a damage seal.....The is a check valve with a o-ring there....

I am going to disagree here, the crankcase vent hose split on my car - that's the ? shaped hose between the oil tank and the engine lifting bracket visible in the picture above. It dumped oil all over everywhere.

theperf, good to know, are you talking about this one? The entry is really high on the tank... But agree you can loose oil from there....

Yes, that's the hose. It spilled over 2 qts of oil in 150-ish miles.
It might be possible to get to with a manual gearbox depending on how the clamps are arranged. I do not think it is accessable on a Tiptronic unless the engine is removed.

A pro tip: if you remove the engine replace this hose!
