Are you saying a letter from your local dealer indicates there is ( or once was ) an "open" recall/warranty? related to what.. 2nd gear popout?! If so, what did they do. It's almost 20 years ago when I first had to explain to the "Service Advisor" and they all acted as if they had never heard of such a thing. A thing, that sure took a long time to go away. Who knows, perhaps it was their first time hearing of it and surely not the last.

I would find that hard to believe. I checked all over for that, and found nothing. Porsche West Palm Beach has nothing on that. I checked.

Maybe if you just bought the car OPC and it has a Porsche warranty. Mine had like 90k on it when it started happening. I just turned 100k a few days ago.

They said to me, once I got the car, be aware that they had advised PO that his car and gearbox required a 'service' as it was confirmed the box was built late 2002, yet his car was built early 2003. Despite this, the 'service' was never done, the dealer advised me that there may in fact be a problem with the box.

My first step was to install the g box detent spring, second phase was to quit drinking beer and save up my nickels.

When I looked into this a few years back, I do recall finding a notice from the NTSB about the second gear issue, but that didn't really apply to me as I am in Canada, so I just got myself a new box and called it a day.

I have the spare box sitting in my shop, and when we drained it of fluid, it was clean. Also dropped a magnet into it and there was no noticable filings, I did not do a Blackstone.

I'll see if I can find the bulletin.

The format has changed since I last looked at this; not sure why all these models were included now, and the website is different.

I'll look more when I get back to my PC.

We now have 20 years fixing the second gear "pop out" If you talk to Roger at CMS, Bryan Copan, Radar, and Chris Cervelli, they will encourage you not to shim the 2nd gear stack. The "shim" repair has often resulted in failures months and years down the road. The successful repair requires buy the 997GT2 mainshaft and with 1st and second gear. At that stage one should replace 3rd gear..
If you spend the monies to shim and replace the second gear, and the "pop out" shows up 1 year later. You are on the hook to get it repaired again. Monies are spent on new parts and labor. I recommend saving up and buying the 997GT2 components.. Get the GT2 parts while they are still available and a decent price. When you see the part prices double, Porsche only has a limited quantity on hand. Part numbers are being removed out of the system weekly..

Really?! Last time I had this gearbox opened up for a look and to install a Wavetrac it was $4K in parts and labor. Most of which was spent on dropping and reinstalling it. Last time I went looking for rebuild price quotes Roger at CMS wanted 8-10K$ that was gears 1/2 and synchros only. I got PCNA to pay instead since I was such an avid student of "2nd gear popout - the how and why". Much better.

22K$! to rebuild? I'll be keeping my car in neutral moving forward. Slowly.

Wow, that practically mechanically totals the car.

I pay a comprehensive premium to cover this. Plus, I have a spare box that will one day get the same treatment, but it'll be a little more economical.
