Farewell, BMC Air Filter
I've been running a BMC air filter that was included as part of my FVD X50 tune that I installed shortly after acquiring my car. This past weekend I was doing some maintenance work and planned to service my BMC filter. I've previously serviced it (i.e., cleaned, followed by a light re-oiling), and it's served me well for years without incident (and yes, absolutely zero issues with fouling the MAF sensor). This time was different - I discovered it was literally in the process of disintegrating within my factory airbox.
I was surprised, but apparently years of heat cycles finally caused it to give up the ghost. It's well beyond its warranty expiration period, so I chalked it up to having served me well and installed a new Mahle LX 696/1 air filter that I had among my spare parts, which is the OEM for the Porsche 996 110 131 71 filter. If you're running an older BMC filter, you might want to check it out to make sure it's still fully intact.

That's not bad.... kind of curious why it self destructed though.

I rinsed mine real well in warm water upon receipt, let it dry then lightly oiled myself. I never had any MAF issues. They are over oiled from the factory IMO.

I have been hearing that CARB/DMV is now flagging cars that have tunes!? This does not portend well. I'm so relieved every year when my reg renews now for like 50 bucks with no smog tests! Passing smog in SoCal is the stuff of nightmares folks with cars like ours ( if modded ). I do not miss it.

My GT3 passed smog with a BMC air filter last May. Did the referee call out your air filter or did you just replace it out of an abundance of caution?
