and I was quite disappointed. The car was very smoothed over and much less involving then the 993tt. Less of a drivers car, more of a luxury GT so I think the 997tt is wrong for my dad becuase he felt the same way. He has both a 997tt and R8 on order so we'll probably go for the R8 but does he get in the mean time because hes stuck with a non reliable but great 928s4GShould he looks at the 996or 997 GT3? Is the 993tt more similar to 997tt or 997GT3

Don't fool yourself about the 996TT. A 996TT X50 w/ a GIAC chip, a set of good coilovers, and a set of race seats and harnesses will totally blow you away, and you will never think about the 993 again. 500-550 hp, precise steering, rigid platform, massive brakes, bigger interior, pedals that hinge from below!!! 993 is cool, no doubt...but a slightly modded 996 moves the game on in a big way. There is a beast lurking inside all these cars.

Why not drive a 997TT, which exists, to at least have that assessment in the can? I find the TT is somewhat a merger of the 993TT and 928 GTS -- eyepopping power and GT refinement, stock.

Everyone is different. I came from a 993tt and never looked back after the switch. I loved my 993tt, but after a few weeks with the 996tt, I sold the 993 because I didn't care for it any longer. No regrets.
Out of 7 - 911's over 20 years, the 996tt is my "hands down" favorite. With a few well chosen mods, such as those mentioned in this thread, the car can be transformed into an awesome ride.

mods...
to anwer your question about what mods to get to reduce the "rubber" steering, I went for PSS9's and new F/R sway bars. Set 3/3 and firm all around, the car is fantastic. Until that point, the car is just a wallowing GT in my opinion. Now, it's closer to a race car (I have stage 2 also).
I cant see a basic stage 2 keeping up with the new 997TT though.

For me FVD PSS9's set at 4 fr, 3 r, with GT3 rear sway bar. This pretty much fixed the wallowy feel and sharpened all the handling....I remember feeling, at high speeds, with the old suspension, that the springs were made out of spaghetti noodles.

thanks guys, we were thinking of just going with the h and r coilovers which everyone seems to get and the GT3 sway bars, is that a good plan? and motor mounts too? I guess...
