Is it a PITA because of monitoring the tranny temp while adding fluid? Or is it the physical removal and replacement of the filter?

The oil level is very critical. Getting the fluid up to temp and checking it, then putting it back on the rack to refill.. The filter is easy.. However, add up all the parts and "oil" then your labor.. Plus you need to service your differential/transgear into the mix..

Brad, what I found is 999.917.547.00 or Shell 3403.M115 (from referencing the Porsche spec #).

This is straight from ZFs website of approved fluids, I have the tip repair manual for the boxster which is a 5 HP-19 so I am assuming the 5 HP-24/24A is the 996 tiptronic, regardless, all of the 5 HP/4 HP model lines from ZF use this spec 999.917.547.00 fluid.

Why I say it is 5 gallons because my local dealership and Sunset said they had 20 liter buckets of it, I assume that is roughly 5 gallons.

Please help

Ok, just what I thought, it is the tranny temp monitoring. Thanks Kevin

Try a Google search for Esso ATF LT 71141.
The fluid reccomended in a TSB for Carreras is Esso ATF LT 71141. It is also used in BMW and VW automatic transmissions, so it should be available at those dealers. I did a Google search and found a letter from Valvoline stating Mercuron V will work in a BMW.

THOMAS R. SMITH
Technical Director, Valvoline Brand
June 7, 2004

To Whom It May Concern:

Valvoline has received several inquiries regarding the topic of MERCON V ATF and its use in various vehicles beyond those requiring DEXRON-III, MERCON, or MERCON V approved products. In response to these questions Valvoline has issued the following statements:

Valvoline supports the use of MERCON V ATF in a broad range of transmissions beyond those requiring DEXRON-III, MERCON, and MERCON V fluids including those where the following fluids are recommended:

o GM DEXRON II
o Allison C-4
o Chrysler ATF+3 or ATF+4 fluids
o Toyota (and Lexus) Type T, T-III or T-IV fluids
o Mitsubishi Diamond SP-II or SP-III fluids
o Hyundai
o Honda ATF-Z1 fluid (except in CVTs)
o BMW LT71141 or LA2634 fluids
o Nissan Matic-D, Matic-J, or Matic-K fluids

MaxLife ATF is recommended for the new 5 and 6 speed transmissions, except the Ford 5R110, Ford 6RXX, and the Mercedes Benz W7A700 (7G-TRONIC) which all require a low viscosity Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Valvoline has conducted in-house testing to support MERCON V ATF performance in these transmissions. However, it is important to note that these vehicle manufacturers have neither evaluated nor approved MERCON V ATF.

Valvoline stands behind all of its products, including MERCON V ATF. Use of MERCON V ATF in transmissions where recommended by Valvoline WILL NOT void the vehicle’s warranty. In the unlikely event that any transmission was to be damaged as a result of the use of MERCON V ATF,
please contact Valvoline at 1-800-Team-VAL.

Valvoline does not recommend MaxLife ATF for use in continuously variable transmissions (CVT’s) or in automatic transmissions where Ford Type F is recommended.

Sincerely,
Thom Smith
Technical Director
Valvoline Brand

I also found a cross reference for OEM users of
Esso ATF LT 71141 in acc. with ZF Order Specification ZFB 838

=>Audi Oil No. G 052 162A1
=>BMW Oil No. 8 322 940 7807
=>Citrogen Oil No. Z 000 169 756
=>Jaguar Oil No. JLM 20238
=>Mercedes Benz Oil No. A 001 989 2203
=>Peugot Oil No. Z 000 169 756
=>Porsche Oil No. 999 917 547 00 (this is the PN in the TSB also)
from
http://www.jie.com/oilref.htm
Also VW ATF part# G 052 162 A1 and A2 is supposed to be Esso ATF LT 71141.

I am having problems locating this "liquid gold"!
FYI;just had my tip servc'd by my shop, my mechanic did not enjoy the job, much more difficult than the 996 carrera tip service and required some extra parts and tools; ended my fantasy of doing it myself
(Black Forest in San Diego, they did it for no extra cost-excellent shop)

Just look up part #999.917.547.00 and see that it has superseded with this #000.043.205.09 and cost of TRANSMISSION OIL 20 is $305.98 . FYI

I previously read here that needed to measure temp as gauge when refilling, was recently quoted 200 parts and labor by porsche tech. Kevin calls it a PST2. I guess its a routine fluid/filter change for Porsche shop but not for diyer.

I ran across info in the transmission fluid forum on bobistheoilguy.com in the post "Any alternatives to BMW SLF auto trans. fluid?"
