But a high mileage car is more likely to incur problems that come with time and wear. Its a pretty safe bet you will have more costs maintaining a 60,000 mile car than a 6,000 mile car.

This may very well be true, but I believe it is the consensus here that these car
fare much better if they are driven regularly.....just my .02

That seems to go against some principles of physics (friction, entropy), but then again, garage queens are often misunderstood.

There's entropy, but there's also atrophy - the car needs some exercise to circulate the various fluids to maintain lubrication of the engine and flexibility of hoses and seals, not to mention to maintain the battery/electrical system and just keep the tires from rotting or flat-spotting (especially with today's soft compounds).

Like most things in life, there's a happy medium - personally, I'm shopping for a 996TT that's been a 2nd or 3rd car, like my current Z4. One that's accumulated enough miles to keep it exercised but not so many it's going to start a lot of wear-related failures; for a 2001-2002 I'm thinking under 50k miles, as low as I can get in my price range and color preference (black/black or black/red).

Well said. I was waiting for someone smarter than myself to make this point more eloquently When I listed that 993TT for sale awhile ago, the owner was very conscious of these things. Thus the car was something like 12yo but had something like 18k on the odometer. But the owner was so meticiulous that he made sure to warm the car up properly, drive it around the block, etc. on a regular basis just so there would be no atrophy, as you put it.

50k miles is getting up there, but a good 3-5k/yr minimum is what I'd look for.

Well, the Source of All Things Evil when it comes to Porsche values (Bruce Anderson) says average miles/year for a 911 is 7-9,000 miles, so for a 2001-2002 I figured I'd be looking for 42-54k. My 2003 Z4 is at just under 30k after 4 years, so the range seems sensible to me. This car is almost exactly what I'm looking for, though a few thousand over my projected budget.

That car looks nice. In this market, I doubt it would fetch $60k, with that mileage, though. Try negotiating with the dealer!

There is an immaculate '04 Tip Coupe at Napleton Porsche in Westmont, Il. I saw it this week, Arctic/Black, 6000 miles . I don't know what they are asking, but it looked like new to me. No affiliation... etc.

I'm also a newbie, but just spent 4 months looking for a car. The $66K seems high for a poorly optioned 02.

i just bought an 02 with just under 40K miles for $65K, but it's an X50 ($17,800) and Aero Kit ($7,500) plus supple / full leather, aluminum package, and a few more small goodies adding up to an MSRP of $153K.

I found 3 other similar cars in the $65K to $70K range with similar options two with less than $15K miles. I figure a basic (non x50) 02 should go for high 50s to $60K max.

Here's the other side of the mileage coin, but the price sure seems right-- $52,990 for 60,000 miles:
