Default Gas Overflow

I've searched and read all filling issues. Seems most tend to be associated with empty tanks, valves and fuses.

This is my issue ... hope someone can point me in the right direction...

When I fuel my 2001 996TT, (from empty, half full or any level) it fills fine , but the gas will over flow and sometimes badly, as if the gas nozzle does not even recognize that the car is full. Rather messy and quite a PIA. (how many times can you clean and wax a fender?)

Any suggestions?

hmmm....this sounds like a pump problem (not the car)? does this happen at all stations/pumps?

Yes, it seems to happen at all stations with all pumps. I've only owned the car for about a month, however, I've refueled quite a number of times as you can imagine. Got smart after the first few and if it's low I only allow about 12 gallons in the tank. If I allow the pump to fill automatically, it'll gush all over the fender.

+1 ^ - does not sound like a problem with the car... the most common problems are the ones you listed...

Only thought is you are not inserting the pump far enough down the fuel filler tube. I know there is a sensor in there that will prevent fuel from flowing in, but that has nothing to do with shutting off the pump.

It almost sounds as if the tank isn't venting as the gas is being fed in.....

I have tried this (standing there making certain nozzle is fully inserted) ... I know this is a weird problem.

I wonder if there is some type of a kink, obstruction, or the like having to do with the filler neck in the car that could be causing this symptom.

How does one check this function?

I would have guessed that an obstruction in the fill line would cause an immediate overflow as you try to force too much gas down into the tank.

There was an issue with kinked filler tubes (Porsche issued a TSB 3/01 1001), but that would not let the tank fill..."Difficulty filling the fuel tank can occur if the flexible fuel hoses in the fuel tank obstruct the inner flap of the fuel filler neck." There was also a recall for 2001 turbos (6/00 A106) Check Clearance of Fuel Return Line and Replacement of Coolant Hose Clamp.

I don't think this is a kinked filler tube problem. I have it happen when I try to top off the tank after the hose has clicked off....if I don't keep filling, I drive away with the needle about 1/8th from full....so I try to slowly let it fill by hand without setting the auto-filler stop. When I do this, the hose doesn't seem to recognize it's full and will overflow but not "gush" out. Have you tried turning the handle upside down and filling it that way? Some of the folks have reported this seems to alleviate some of the problems associated with the tank not filling all the way up....but I haven't heard about the gushing problem.

The gas nozzles shut off when fuel reaches the nozzle and creates a back pressure....you'd think that a kinked hose would create that back pressure and cause it to shut off rather than keep flowing.

It still happens on the 997TT too. I have to be very careful and fill by hand to make sure it gets filled all the way and without any gushing.

Interesting thread... I "filled" up my 01 TT for the first time this past weekend and it kept topping off when I know it wasn't full. At a loss, I just said forget it, got back in the car and noticed that it was only 3/4 full. Any ideas? Do you think that kinked fuel line posted above is the culprit? Anyway to check/fix?

I've filled my car and after the pump shut off, i tried to put the last little bit up to even out the dollar amount (up to the next $0.25) and it overflows. Now i just fill it until it shuts off and don't go any higher. I am not sure where exactly the gas tank is, but it seems like the filler neck is very short or maybe it is a smaller diameter than normal so it fills up very quickly and easily overflows the side?

On my other cars, i could put in $0.50 or $0.75 to bring it up to the next dollar pretty easily without it overflowing.
