Default Thoughts on my latest mod: LED's on 996TT

First off, let me preface this post with putting a disclaimer out there that I’m sure some of you guys will think this “mod” is dumb or “rice” and I have thought about that too… but I decided to go with it and do what has not been done before on a 996TT (albeit it’s a small mod ***61514; ) and experiment to see how it looks.

We all have seen the new audi’s (and even some of the new Porsches and TA Porsche) with the LED lights in the headlights/grill. Kind of like this

And of course on the new TA cayenne

I did some long and hard research and found that the “best and brightest” led’s with built in resistors are these ” Superflux 4 Chip LEDs”. These are pretty expensive each (compared to the $1.00 ones you see on ebay and others) but I have to say these are the brightest led’s that I have ever seen sold in the secondary market.
Here’s a comparison with the cheaper leds vs the superflux

While I had the bumper off, I experimented trying to find which slat on the radiator duct the lights will look good along an “oem” look.
Top slat

Middle slat

Lower slat

I actually like the look on the lower slat but I didn’t feel that the look of the lights in the daytime is “balanced” so I went with the middle slat.
Time to test the light…very bright

The next thing I needed to do is mount it on the slat somehow. After visiting my local hardware store as well as hobby stores, I found a trash can with a "lip" that was perfect for the lights.
I started drilling holes and mounting the lights

After I was done, I had it cut out and trimmed to fit the slat

Here's the car this morning
Lights off (the only thing that bothers me is you can see the yellow in the led. I might smoke it later to make it more discrete)

Lit up

Finally a video I did last night.

Comments/thoughts are always appreciated

I think it looks pretty good!
I didn't get too many positive comments when I did something similar to my 993tt - I took out the fog lights to put in brake ducts...in Canada you are supposed to have daytime driving lights which the fog lights were functioning as, so I put these PIAA LEDs in.

I would have put the LEDs as high as possible, (closer to the headlights) like the cayenne and audis.

either way, looks cool. How about retrofitting the rear 997LEDs onto the 996?

Move it to the top slat. It's reflecting off the bottom so it looks like you have four leds

I like the Idea of using LEDs on our 996 TT

I do not like the bumper to be honnest. It look like a techart style bumper which I am not a fan.

besides this Idea is very cool, as well as the quality of the result.

I would do the same on astock bumper, If it is possible.

Harris,

I went with the TA bumper b/c I wanted an aggressive look and I thought the LED adds to that... but I do know that some may not like the TA bumper.

I'm afraid it's going to reflect wherever I put it, unless I put a lip on the bottom of the LED strip.

I tohught about that too but I personally think it looks "cleaner" when the two lights are distinguishable

As long as you like it, that's what it's all about. I think maybe why some people didn't give good feedback is b/c the fog light looks like it was just put on there and doesn't look integrated or OEM. I thought also about buying some led strips but it wouldn't look oem, hence this little project.
