Overall, my engine noise at idle is quieter now.

The "quieter engine" observation was made by my next door neighbor, who is 10 years younger than me, a gear head, and a mechanical engineer with a phenomenal sense of hearing who is also a guy who is **** retentive in terms of assessing all things mechanical.

Got 2 cases of Mobil 1 5w-50 coming in. Mail order.

Even if the stuff arrives today before I leave office I won't have time to dump it in Turbo before I head out later today. Did change oil -- used Mobil 1 0W-40 oil -- Sunday so Turbo's got fresh oil for the 3400+ mile road trip I got planned for it.

When I return I'll change oil to the 5w-50 stuff and see how it goes.

Sincerely,

Macster.

My hearing is probably getting bad too as Statman suggested above, but my idle is much quieter for sure after putting in the 5W50. Not to mention that with the 110+ degree temps here it has got to be better for the engine. One could argue that in colder temps that it wouldn't help (may even hurt if temps were cold enoguh) but in my situation a 70 weight oil would probably be good. It's Africa Hot!!!

Here are the specifics for both "0W" and "5W" oils...

Cold:

Low Temp Viscosity in cP

0W = Cranking Max - 3,250 @ -30C / Pumping Max - 60,000 @ -40C

5W = Cranking Max - 3,500 @ -25C / Pumping Max - 60,000 @ -35C

Here are the specifics for 40 and 50...

High Temp (100C)

40 = 12.5-16.3 cSt
50 = 16.3-21.9 cSt

It appears that at cold temperatures both 0W and 5W perform essentially the same. The benefit of 5W-50 is at the higher temperatures. The Turbo owner's manual specifies that 5W-50 is for use when temperatures are generally higher than 50F. My guess is if someone ran 5W-50 in an area where the average temperature was less than 50F, then the mechanic's comment about Porsche's trouble with lifters at higher viscosity grades might be true.

Kevin highly recommended I run 5W-50 here in Atlanta. That's all I needed to hear...

Jeff,

Hit up user Chuck Jones. He hooked me up to his source in NorCal. Wasn't cheap but wasn't outrageous either.

Jeff
Use the site's search function and look for 5w-50 and it will come up.

The blurb now gives order size is 1 case, 6 quarts. I sent email in pointing out order size not clear.

I ordered two cases the other day. I'm in Tehachapi CA though with the Turbo -- this Turbo thing climbs the hills like they aren't even there! -- and the oil is probably not even sitting back at office yet.

It will be there when I return sometime middle of next week.

Seriously: Heading east on 58 from Bakersfield to Tehachapi last night this car felt like it had some silent rocket boosters attached. And stable through the high speed turns, oh yes, stable, very.

God I love this car!

Sincerely,

Macster.
