0-60 tip vs 6spd
Did a search found nothing. The second edition of Leffingwell's Buyers Guide for the 911 lists the 01-04 996TT tip at a 4.9 and the 6spd 4.2. I just picked this copy up today, and I have always thought the 0-60 was the same and a bit quicker with the current 997TT Tip. Are these numbers correct?

The tip was slightly slower than a properly run 6speed for the 996, but the tip is also similarly faster for the 997. I would say the tip rating for the 996 in your reference is wrong.

over here in Greece it is very very difficult to be faster to 60 mph from standstill with a manual car Vs the Tip...
even at higher Hp cars ( 600+hp ) tiptronics are faster due to fact it is far more easy to start rolling the car.....
although ^-speed car is far more desirable for me

997TT tips had a higher stall speed and those trick variable vane turbos allowing them to build full boost while torque-braking before launch resulting in those amazing 0-60 times. My 996TT didn't build much boost doing that, and didn't seem to affect 0-60 much - my Escort Timer would usually indicate mid 4 second runs. (the factory spec was 0-100km/h in 4.9)
A perfectly launched and shifted manual could beat it, but one slip up and I'd be gone!

I would disagree about the tip being an "undesirable option" on the 996 turbo. I have had my 996 turbo S for almost a year and I specifically purchased the car because it has a tip. I live in a high traffic congestion area (Metro Washington DC) and the tip allows for an easier commute and for general driving in high traffic areas. The car is extremely quick and nimble and really not all that different then a manual in my opinion. It is a personal opinion and a need defined by circumstance. I also have a 993 and a 930 - both have manual transmissions and use them when running in the country. If I could only have one in my area it would be a tip. Just my 2 cents.

+1. I have had plenty of manuals in the past. A porsche tip works very well. My 996TT is my second tip too (my 99 996 was a tip).

Same here as Ralph points out....as one gets older and encounters more and more stop-and-go traffic, the option of the tip becomes more attractive. What the hell, we're not all budding Dale E's....and the stereotypical mindset for a TT is the 6 speed because that's what racing cars are supposed to have. And a Porsche is a supercar right? But when you factor in other issues like the driver's age, possible physical issues, traffic congestion, or a wife who might like to drive it periodically but cant' handle a stick....then a tip becomes a viable option. I guess you lose macho points if you have a pu$$y tip??? Just think of how many points you lose if it comes with (Oh God no!!)....a CUP HOLDER....I shudder at the mere thought. Christ, next thing you know, I'll be reading Danielle Steele books and looking for my hot pink undershorts.

No racing was being engaged in but Lambo driver did get on his car a bit and the very quick shifts were music to my ears. Made the glacially slow shifts of my Turbo's 6-speed manual seem even slower if that's possible.
There was only a very slight lift of the Lambo's engine as the next gear selected, with a bit of an exhaust backfire at this lift off. Very impressive. And acceleration was quite fast and seamless compared to my Turbo's shifting.
Made my Turbo feel even slower than it is.
In some cases manual transmissions suck.
Sincerely,
Macster.

I could have only one in your area.
