original maintenance book doesn't match car
Just recently purchased an '01 turbo which had an original stamped maintenance book with the VIN tag and all. Didn't realize at first, but the book is for a different car. Both cars came from the same dealer so only thing I can figure is that maybe they were both in for service at some point and the books got switched? The person I bought the car from never looked at it and had no idea. The dealer has purged all their records that old and can't tell me anything. Is there any way to track down the other cars owner from the VIN? I thought maybe a carfax, but don't want to pay for a carfax on the other persons car. Just thought they might want the correct book, and I'd like to have the correct one for mine. The one I have is for a 2003 turbo X50.

really? first thing i would do is check the odometer for tampering.. i'm kidding of course
but the manual you have is a little better, certainly newer and highlights the few improvements for the 03 MY. just don't read the section on cupholders, as it may result in cup holder envy. also, don't try to keep the owners manual in the glove box.
i'm kidding.. sorry...
there isn;t enough of a difference btw the model years in terms of critical measures, specs, and "how to's, so, unless it really bothers you? the car's 12+ years old and any manual for a 996 tt is good...
add:
but none of the foregoing answers your question(s).. so i am sorry. i am incorrigible.

that then would explain the inappropriateness of my reply. thanks for pointing that out.
add: oh wow. you mean that little book that mimics a passport and has stamps that say "so and so porsche, pompano beach? 30k service done"
why, i've seen birth certificates that looked worse than those! i can see why he'd want it!

Yes, I was referring to the maintenance book, since it has the VIN/option sticker in it to match someone else's car. You know, the one that matches the one under the hood.

You googled the other vin, yes? No hits? Post your vin, tell anyone looking to PM you....and periodically search for the other vin.
You can probably get color for the other car, maybe sniff around PCA events?
Of course Porsche probably has the current owners name and addy, but there is zero chance of getting to it that way.
