Pre purchase inspection

Pre purchase inspection
Hey guys,
I am considering purchasing a 2001 996 Turbo. It's nicely optioned, 1 owner with approximately 72,000 miles. It has an absolute perfect maintenance history log right from day 1...
A couple of questions. I am not sure but with the out of this world price for any Air -Cooled Turbo, could the 996 Turbo be the up and comer? Seems to be a lot of car for the money.
When considering a Pre Purchase, I am thinking of taking it to the servicing dealer, they have all the records etc. are there some items that I should have them pay particular attention to?
Do you guys enjoy the 996 Turbo?
Thanks in advance..
Brett

Do not take it to the servicing dealer. As a matter of fact,I've learned from experience not to take it to any dealer for PPI. Find an independent shop in your area specialized in Porsche that comes with very good recommendations. They will be more thorough and take their time.

If you find a good independent they'll know what to look for... But just in case,do a search on this forum for common 996TT problems and you'll find plenty of threads/answers.
Good luck!

do a search on the inspection items - has been written up many times
these are great cars, but are mechanical devices and things will break
Sounds like you did the most important thing which was to get one with a documented history
where are you?
Someone might be able to help you find a good shop

Check the service records for these items: clutch/flywheel, clutch accumulator, spoiler rams, coil packs, cam solenoid bracket, coolant pipe replacement/fix, expansion tank, and headlight switch.
Prospective buyers are usually interested in seeing how many type 1 and type 2 over-revs the car has. Having a full service history is a good thing, and a having thorough PPI (in addition to the service history) is an even better thing.
They are great cars. With up-to-date maintenance they are very reliable, and they are very addictive too!

I've heard as many problems with independent shops as people say there is with the dealer. Honestly I'd goto the dealer and forget the indy shops. After a few "my indy shop over filled my car with oil" threads because they didn't drain the tank, you realize indy shops have lots of knuckle heads working there.

dealerships are the worst place for a ppi. particularly if there is ANY mods to the car. they WILL/can miss stuff. even paint meter stuff. they use a friggin checklist from porsche that merely checks that tolerances and expungables eg tires/pads/clutch etc are within "spec".
plus one on going to an indie that KNOWS the 96 turbo's.

Hey guys,
Going to pass on the car. Reading thru the latest invoices it states that the clutch is ready to be replaced, as well as the brakes are coming due.
With 73,000 miles and the seller not wanting to come down past 39K i can't make the numbers work..
Thanks for your input..

Kevin @ UMW has a pretty extensive checklist in what to look for during a PPI.

With that many miles and a working clutch, the price should be a little lower. Because of the clutch and brakes you probably should be around 36k. Has the PO completed the 60k service? Keep in mind you will need to do some servicing as well. All in youll be in the low 40's when all is said and done which could afford you a lower mileage car.
