Shifter rough first to second
I recently purchased a 2001 996TT. It's low mileage, well maintained and great overall. Between first and second gear there is a rough spot in the shifter stroke. I don't hear any gear clash, but the first to second shift is just not as smooth as the others. Is this typical or is there a linkage adjustment that could take the notch out of the shifter movement?
Thanks

I noticed this on mine as well. I have a B&M short shifter, which some say is more notchy as well. Do you know if yours is a stock or short shifter? When I drive my dad's Boxster with the standard shifter, IMHO it is much smoother. Not sure if you can adjust the notchiness. There is a cable adjustment which requires extreme precision when switching from stock to short.

Thanks. I'm sure it is stock. It is a one owner and I have his service and improvement records. The feedback is appreciated. Apparently, the shifters are a bit notchy.

if you've ruled out any synchro issue(s?), then there could indeed be a minor linkage issue. esp if you have an ssk or aftermarket b&m installed. also, old trans oil will make these VERY notchy when cold. change you gear oil much more than they recommend.
i'm pretty sure the factory service sched for this car was intended for those that keep their cars garaged and sitting lol

I changed my trans diff fluid to Mobile 1 Delvac. which has no limited slip additives, this seems to make the synchros work better, and does help but every tt I have driven has a notchy 1 to 2 shift, which only gets exasperated by short throw shifters. I have also heard changing over to the more robust shifter cables ( GT3) helps

Thanks for all the great feedback. I'm going to have a service and inspection at Isringhausen and will mention the trans fluid to the tech.
Much appreciated.

it's too important to the MT cars. can't stress it enough. the book ( iirc? ) says change trans oil at 90k miles. thats insane lol. again, some of their recommendations are head scratchers. i bet if you change it right now it won;t be notchy any more. GL with it.

I change my oil and filter every 4000 miles, and gear oil every 12,000 miles with the M1 Delavc 75w-90, changed brake fluid at 21K, and coolant at 30K (car has 36K), I agree, the book does have you scratching your head! Hopefully you have records on what and when fluids were changed. Should at least give you a baseline. If you don't may I suggest you change them all now then you have somewhere to start.

I had this same issue on my car. It was rough (at times, not always) to shift into second, like something notchy and not really smooth. That never happens on any other gear and never on downshifts, only when up-shifting from first.
Long story short (I had 2nd gear popout) I had the tranny rebuilt by Porsche. They changed the first three gears, synchros, forks etc, a 6000$ job done under warranty. When I got out of the dealer I thought that maybe the notchiness would be gone. But no. Still there at times, but not always. I figured that it's just the way these cars feels going from 1st to 2nd. I have brand new tranny oil, so this is not it. But the 2nd gear popout is gone now luckily.
It's just the way it is.
