this is what i mean..ive read that the rods can bend with alot of torque. i was planning on upgrading to a set of billet k16 when i get my 996.

is a tuned/torquey billet k16 thats daily (with some spirited driving) driven going to stress it?

@sdematt has a set of billet K16s in his car; it is quite quick, but it lacks the top end of the K24s - I say his car is a much better city car than mine, but once on the highway, the flexibility of larger turbos is much nicer.

SRM Bad rep for quality or the lack of support or updates on paid orders?

Am now wondering if I should simply send my k24s to Markski and build a 4.0l for the Xona's.

+1. And despite that I decided to try and order some 996 parts and hard an absolute terrible experience. Wouldn't give them a penny.

Lack of support and even just delivering a product at all, let alone in a timeframe they initially give.

K16 billets make zero sense, none. You have a turbo with a ton of low end and lousy top end. The low end torque is capable of bending stock rods so you must detune it in the low to mid range. You then have a turbo which is responsive but has with a mediocre low to mid range paired with a mediocre top end.

Makes a lot more sense to go with a larger frame turbocharger with a more gradual spool in the low end/midrange and a much stronger top end. Xona XR1000 is probably hands down the best available turbocharger currently available on the market. Direct bolt on with the OEM architecture.

They're cheap but yep almost all of the bent rods I've seen here in my 11 years in this game were K16 billets.

I’m much happier with my k24’s compared to my k16’s. Yes, they don’t hit as hard in the mid range, but the power is much more progressive and the top end is WAY stronger

I gave up after 18 months, with the distributor, and they were friendly enough, but couldn't deliver.

I've worked with them and have been to the shop in Las Vegas. Sean installed 12mm studs in my case with his CNC and did a great job. It took some badgering to get him to finish it. I use his fuel pump setup also. He's a cool dude and has talent but I think he's an alcoholic so it makes it difficult to get things done on time and get good service. He was for a while making Porsche parts when nobody else was so it was nice. I think he's moved more to the Audi side. Again, happy with what I got from him but there are issues working with them.

so if you arent interested in building a track car or big hp car..just doing bolt ons with the stock turbo is sufficient?

Stock K16s are never sufficient lol. All he's saying is that the K16 billets are a bit awkward but they get you good power for the cheapest price if you're looking to hit 600. It's awkward to detune your car on the low end and then run out of breath on the top end.

if only there were more k24s to go around. doesnt seem there is anything in between for a slight upgrade that is a bolt on.

I still think the K16 billets are a legitimate option. You send them to Blouch Performance Turbo, I think it's pretty cheap. You need the right tuner and I think you have to be careful not to floor it at low rpm to protect the rods. Pwdrhound has exquisite taste so he always goes with really high end options. It's not totally ideal but the K16 hybrids do work. I have K24 hybrids and they're pretty laggy honestly, so it's not all that either. I think about getting Xonas sometimes but they'd probably blow out my transmission.
