Thanks everyone. I've already put in an order at Pelican Parts for some oil filters. The car is a 6 speed manual and is black on black. It is very light on options, but it does have the x50 package. I wasn't looking for that but I won't complain.

The noise does sound like it's coming from either an idler pulley or the power steering pump. I've only been in one other turbo so I really have no idea what a good one should sound like.

If any of you north Georgia people know of a good Porsche shop that has extensive experience with the 996 TwinTurbo model I would be very interested to meet them.
I'm sure I could go to the local dealership but...

Mobil-1 5w-40 TDT will quiet things down a bit.
As far as the rattling goes, you can try a couple things to see if you have a LWFW:
1) Warmed up and in neutral, turn on the AC and it should get louder
2) Press in the clutch peddle and the rattling should stop

Mine is quiet as stock sometimes and other times it gets noisy. Not sure why, but it is what it is. IMO, knowing what the noise is puts my mind at ease.

Idler pulleys are common and not that expensive, hopefully will be something minor.

Having the clutch engaged or not makes no difference
I will play around the the AC

Not sure what LWFW means ( I'm such a newb)

Yeah at this point I would just like to know

Thanks Dock I've read several of your posts , hoping to meet you and some of the other local guys soon.
Is car came from Arizona and supposedly it has 5w50 in it now. That being said he previous owner had a shop do the oil change right before he put it up for sale and when I checked it was a quart low. Who knows if they used the right stuff.

The previous owner sent with the car a 5 pack of M15w50 and two car covers.
So I believe him when he said he has been changing the oil with Mobil 1.

Ah, no this guy was meticulous about keeping the car all original and stock. I have the receipts where he went to Porsche and bought new brake pads and rotors.
Although who knows what could have happened before him...

The clutch "test" is done at a standstill in neutral with the clutch released; this is when you can really hear the "coffee can with marbles" sound a LWFW makes.

I stopped by Hennessy today and talked with the Steve the service advisor. He brought a tech out and said that this is just the sound these cars make. Nothing out of the ordinary. He did mention that the power steering pump is pretty heavy duty on these models because of the need to assist the clutch and that the power steering is loud.

They told me to have fun and drive the heck out of it!

Good news then. It took me quite a while to learn how to shift well with mine. These are nothing like a Cayman or Boxter in that regard.
