My sample set is 1 car, never tracked, rarely revved, low-ish miles, not tuned (at the time), etc. And its fittings failed. So our experiences are opposite of each other's.
My opinion is based on a combination of the (unscientific) data presented on Rennlist forums, and my personal logic.

Assuming the engine is already out for other service, anyone know what the approximate cost of having an indy weld or pin the fittings is?

A shop told me around 3500 to pull motor and pin. Was curious on their opinion of fitting failure, not planning on having it done unless motor is out for other reasons.

IIRC. $1200-1700 range for welding.

I track-I lost sleep-I fixed them. Others that track said theirs were fine- they failed as well- they fixed them. If you track your car fix your fittings. Those that don't track- well- they will fail also. Not if- but when but lower consequences. Those that know don't want unfixed fittings on the track with them.

trust me I'm knocking on wood as I say this, I only enjoy my car on the track, boring to drive Florida streets. I've had 5 + long years of track miles 20k +/- and don't have an issue yet. Am I going to loose sleep, no, if it fails I'll deal with it then, weld or pin and back to the track. What $ucks I had the motor out to do the intake piping to the turbo's and wish I knew more about it then I would of fixed then.

so it's just like that? every 996 turbo made that is still on the road will have coolant fittings fail, sooner or later, one day or another. wow.

i still don't see it, but at 127,775? i will stop tempting fate by being the contrarian lol

i dont believe its the tracking as such, more heat cycling, and lord knows mines been heat cycled lol

Thanks for the data point.

I'll get back with you here on the forum when my 996 Turbo finally springs a coolant pipe leak at 250k miles (just a guess on the mileage, as my car may never spring a leak). On second thought, based on my average annual mileage, I probably won't live long enough to see 250k miles, so my son (who inherits the car when I'm gone) will have to report back to this forum if and when the coolant pipes leak...assuming this forum is still here in +50 years.

My indy charged $750 to "remove, clean, and weld" the fittings, once the engine was out.

Another 5 year owner here with track and street duty at 75k miles. I'm already stocking up on parts for the moment it does happen and I need a excuse to put in bigger injectors too.

It was ~$500 to have mine TIG welded through Sunset Porsche Audi. They took the parts over to a local weld shop.

@Dock...my car has never been tracked or even been close to abused, and I had the beginnings of a failure.

You've been the only owner?

Fair question. I bought it with 19k miles, so I cannot say for sure the guy before me didn't track it. Based up it's condition then, I doubt it was.

Regardless, the coolant failure during my ownership occurred 30k miles after I purchased the car.

Should we assume then it was tracked and had the **** ran out of it and waited for another 30k miles to blow?
