Default Factory Nav question

Someone that I know is selling factory nav out of a 2002 turbo. I have a 02 turbo with a bose system. Is this a plug & play or does it get more complicated then that?

Don't do it! I'm replacing mine tomorrow with a new Alpine Nav unit.

Can you up date the maps? I like the factory because it looks right in the dash. If it doesn't work out, I'll have to go another way.

When I was looking into a Turbo my research was the early cars with the 1st generation (?) NAV were not too good, well, the cars were ok the NAV was not too good.

There had been no map updates available for a long time. The newer NAV system -- I can't recall the year it first appeared now -- was better, but a NAV unit was not a must have for my needs and I found a 2003 sans any NAV.

Here are some specifics from Porsche 996 The Essential Companion:

3 different units (this in all 996 models not just the Turbo): PCM/1 8-bit version most common in pre-2002 MYs installed from the PCM's into until Feb. 2001; PCM/1 16-bit version into'd in Feb. 2001; PCM/2 MOST version into'd for MY 2002.

The differences between the NAV units is "huge" because of the data transfer speed. The 8-bit PCM NAV unit can be exchanged with the 16-bit version (with new system software for the PCM display unit), but the PCM/2 unit can not be installed into any pre-2002 996 including the early Turbo models that were built before Feb. 2001.

The basic problem for the PCM/1 and PCM/2 NAV units is that Porsche did not pay to have the map database issue an updated CD-ROM for these systems. The maps are woefully out of date.

Summary of navigation software status: The PCM/1 8-bit system was abandoned as soon as the 16-bit system was put into service. The latest NAV database available on CD-ROM is dated 2000.1 and is "fundamentally useless".

The PCM/1 16-bit system was abandoned almost as soon as it was intro'd. Officially the latest NAV database is dated 2000.1 but a 2002 update has been issued for some countries.

PCM/2 was abandoned after MY 2004 with the last available NAV databased dated 2004.8.

PCM/2.1 level A and B system use a DVD (NAV unit installed under right seat or in the luggage compartment) database, the current status of which can be checked by contacting either NavTeq or any Porsche dealership.

What does this all mean for 996 owners? The 8-bit system is useless.

The 16-bit system can be retro-fitted to the early models but it costs a lot of money and is only of any use to European 996 owners. NavTeq made its 2007 Vauxhall NAV data CD-ROMs compatible with the Siemens PCM system. The update also requires a software system update. The downside is the cost, which is high for equipment and software update plus the added cost of a new set of 7 CD-ROMs.

Sadly for American owners no such update was ever made available so the 16-bit system status is no better than the 8-bit system.

The PCM/2 MOST system is also now seriously out of date so its value is diminishing all of the time. Updated CD-ROMs were promised but were they every delivered?

The above is taken from the aforementioned 996 Essential Companion. The info may be out of date, that is regarding the availability of the updated map databases. Before you leap you should check to see what is available.

Racer959, I wish I could answer your question but I have not done what you are trying to do so I just don't know. If I understand correctly you have a CR220 head unit now. If I had to guess I would think it would be a little more complicated than just plugging the navi/pcm in (I could be wrong though).

Have you considered using something like a Tranzit Blu Bluetooth adapter with your current radio and then using your phone for navi, music, Pandora, etc..? I have been running one for a couple years in my CayenneTT. Basically this is a small box that takes power and ground and sits behind the radio. It is connected inline between the car's fm antenna and the radio. You set it to a non used radio station which you save as a preset and then anytime you want to use the phones navigation, music, pandora, etc...you just hit that preset radio station and you have the audio through the stock system. This is not a wireless fm modulator it is actually connected to the radios antenna input and the sound is actually pretty darn good.
