Default Crap - 997.2 clutch just went - Cost?

2009 C2S 119.5K miles MT

Darn... just went.

I don;t think the car will make it out to my Indy far out in Pheonixville.... so I guess... ~gulp~ ... to the dealership close by..... boy it hurts to say this.

I can't do the work myself for the simple reason is I don't want to do this on jackstands on my back... assuming it could be done that way. Here is where I say stuff like "that is what I work for, convenience".

What hurts the most, is that I used to brag that I never replaced the clutch in my 2000 Boxster S with 197K miles on it when the 2nd engine died. I purchased that car new.

For this 2009 C2S, maybe I can blame the previous owner who put 26K miles on it. I dunno.... I always rev match and heal toe.... never jerk the car on downshifts... something I am proud of.

Symptoms........ first, I was hearing an occasional rumble that I thought may be a rear wheel bearing going.... or maybe an engine pully. Not all the time.... but occasionally I would hear this over the last few weeks. Still could be one of these things, but it was what, probably the throw out bearing?

Today, I get in to run to Lowes and the clutch was really high.... oh oh.... no slippage... just high... then the gear box got tight where shifting was just wierd... oh oh.... then came the big slip under hard acceleration in 3rd... engine revs ran up and then down fast when on/off the gas.

Got home .... shifting was really just...... wierd... high odd feeling clutch... super chunky shifts..... crap.

My wife will drive up behind me to the dealer tonight..... Don Rosen in Conshohocken... I always liked these guys but they are not cheap.

Any idea on cost?

Bonus question.... do they change the fluid when they do this? I know this dealership uses Delvac and not Mobilube PTX.

The sharp ones out there may recognize that in 500 miles, I am do for plugs and maintenence..... already have my order in at Pelican... no way dealer will take my fun away.... belt, plugs, filters, wipers...... new Craftsman torque wrenches (from Sears tool outlet on sale) gonna be good.

Peace

I’m guessing 2k for pressure plate, friction disc, and system bleed. If you need new flywheel it’s going to be more. Oh and might as well do throwout bearing too. They might drop engine and tranny to do it. Trannny for sure

Honestly, he is just too far. I just dropped it off at Conshohocken Porsche (formerly Don Rosen). I feel bad, my indy, Bill Boys is the ex-shop forman from Don Rosen Porsche...... Bill is about 45 mnts away and I have to deal with my dear other......

Default 997.2 Clutch replacement

I had mine clutch replaced at Fremont Porsche for about $2600. They also found a crack on the slave clutch cylinder (plastic) that they replaced for $200. My car had only 45000 miles at the time, but I bought it used and Gunter (service manager) recommended replacing the clutch. They flushed the hydraulic fluid as well. Bleeding the clutch is not as straight forward because the bleeder is not easily accessible. All in all I'm happy with the work. I returned later for a software update for a "Sports Mode". It changed the throttle response completely and no longer getting the throttle lag. It required adding a switch to the panel. As far as transmission gear oil, I changed it myself and I selected Porsche's gear oil because the Aisin transmission is quite finicky on the correct type of gear oil,

Sorry to hear about this. A bit surprised you didn't have more warning 8(

Good luck with the repair.

Yeah, I know. I wonder if it really was the clutch... being worn out that is. As I noted above, I was hearing what sounded like a wheel bearing going. Came and went over the last few weeks. During this time the clutch felt fine.

So.... if the noise was coming from the clutch system..... maybe it wasn't just worn out. Something else may have failed. I also noted I had trouble shifting.... getting into reverse... well it just would not go.... letting out the clutch or reving the engine did not help.... I just had to push hard.... then it would go.

I never wore out a clutch before, but from what I learned, the thing slips.... not noise or stiff shifting.

This will be interesting .... and expensive!

Peace

Mine went 2weeks ago at 115,000 miles. It feels like the pressure plate or throw out bearing has failed rather than clutch wear but I'm still waiting for them to open it up to find out.
At this mileage the flywheel probably should be changed as well due to the time necessary to get there.
Count on ~3800 or so with the DMF. PM me if you want all the details I discovered trying to figure out the best way to do this.

Talk to my friend Chris (CBRacerx on Rennlist). He has been working on Porsches for 30 years, and he opened up a side business doing repairs and modifications. He lives in the New Hope PA area, but I'm sure you guys can arrange to trailer your car to him. I'm sure his rates are lower than the dealership, and you won't be disappointed with the work.

Having mine replaced now. You're prolly in the $2200 $2500 range w/o a flywheel add about $1500 for that. Hurts but its part of it. I would do it myself but crawling around on the garage floor doing car yoga all weekend hurts worse.

I'll post when I get the total.

Spoke to the service manager this morning... they are going to open it up in a few hours... I guess they are not that busy.

From our short discussion, he thinks it is probably the slave cylinder...... not being able to shift was the trigger for his comment.

We will see.

Crap.... it was the clutch.... wore out. Darn I am a loser. Well, I am going to blame this on the previous owner..... I learned all kind of responsibility avoidance techniques since I got married.

He doesn't know if the flywheel requires replacement.... will know later today. Has to order parts, and should be done tomorrow.... worst case with flywheel, $4200. Didn't catch what he said about the price for the non-flywheel estimate 'cause I was busy throwing up.

Peace
