Both Bruce in Philly and sbbarnett make some great points but let me add this caveat...buy the best you can afford. That shiny Snap-On or MAC truck can suck the money right out of you.
I have my Dewalt set that I love, plus many different brands of (all different types) tools that I have purchased over the years (both new and used) Some where less expensive and sacrificed to make specialty tools while others were top shelf used tools that I have 40yrs of use with to this day. I've cut down, welded, bent, notched and filed a whole army of tools to do the things I've needed over the years, as I would assume many others here have done.
Buying used certainly can save you a big chunk of coin; I just picked up two used MAC torque wrenches from a retired aircraft mechanic for less than a third the cost of new and these guys are immaculate.
You can even get refurbished and re-certified (if needed) micrometers, calipers and gages from places like Ideal Precision at great prices. -- Not really needed for every day work though

BTW, one of the best bargains in high quality German tools are the Wera or Stahlwille Advent calendars. You have to keep an eye out for them. They sell out fast. .

The two most important tools for a breakdown are in the Wera 2019 version. Not sure what all that other stuff is for.

It's a late summer afternoon. I'm driving my Bavarian date west and into the Black Forest in a 997.2 cab S. Her smile helps me overlook her previous affinity for Spaten. The Porsche PDK lets me leave my hand on her thigh for most of the drive.
In the high woods, near Triberg, I spot a secluded open field and feign vapor lock. She accepts my explanation that it will clear once the engine cools down. In the frunk is my trusty Wera Advent 2019 tool set, a small cooler and 4 ice cold Rothaus Pils.
She notices how small the Wera Stubby bottle opener appears in my hands and comments on this as I open our first pair of pils. I think to myself that's smart German engineering to make a man's hands look larger.
She lays back on the blanket, my beer tips over and spills into the grass. None of that matters now...... a cloud passes overhead.

I ended up buying this tool set because it looks so cool and seeing that Swingwing (an ex pilot with impeccable taste in cars) had one,
It's way smaller than what I expected. Quality, packaging and haptics are very good with the exception of the silly plastic sleeve around the extensions. It's probably a good set to keep in the car for little nits that might go wrong on the road but no way are you going to wrench yourself out of serious trouble with this set. I'm not a good enough wrencher to spend much more that what a good Craftsman set will do.

One of life's universal truths.... "Somewhere, some guy is sick of putting up with her crap."
But it's always so easily overlooked at the beginning. (grin)

@sbbarnett On ebay with a little bit of a premium - it won't come until Sep/Oct but looks to be a solid seller.

Been looking for a nice set of ratchet set to work on the 997 (small stuff), as well as things around the house. My old one from my dad isn't doing great. Is this one the right set or shall I get something else? Wera makes quite a few and it's a bit confusing.

@alexb76 76 this is $145 USD on Amazon right now. (next 12 hours + a lot more Wera) I bought this and another $900 + worth. Wish I never saw this post but I will be happy with the tools, they seem to be as good as the reviews most people leave. Nice stuff.

I am just a hack... but... an expensive lesson I keep relearning: Buy good stuff. I should have purchased, very early on, a very large set of quality tools. I should have just wrote a big check. I suspect it is cheaper in the long run ... definitely in money cost, but all the mashed knuckles and such.... the stripped bolt heads... There is one big big advantage of buying cheap tools one at a time: You develop quite a lexicon of creative curse words.
Peace

So, if I wanted Wera, or another high quality toolset, which exact toolset would be a good starting point?
