Default We need a 'newbie' sticky - who's up for it?

I think there are a lot of great guys in here and a lot of great information. You all have been more than patient and encouraging for every newbie (including me at once) that comes along.

But really, it's gets old seeing the same questions and dishing out the same advice every few days week after week.

Who's up for co-authoring (and/or proofing) an 'intro to newbies' post that can be a sticky and we can refer these people to when they first come in?

Basic Outline -

Consider your Overall Budget
Research and Due Dilligence
Why PPIs are Important
Aftermarket Warranties
Buying Strategies
Maintenance
After You Buy

No reason not to address each situation and clarify as time goes on. Most people use Search, but often a direct question makes sense. Entropy will always increase.

I think all new members should get the same help that you did so I am not in favor of a sticky. Passing along information and wisdom is what we should for friends and family.

Please understand - I'm not suggesting we just refer these people to the sticky and then throw them to the sharks but a lot of their questions and a lot of our answers are the same from one week to the next.

If we give them this basic knowledge they will have answers to questions they were going to ask as well as they those they didn't have enough knowledge to ask.

As a result, once up to speed, they will ask better questions to the forum.

I am volunteering to make the first draft and see it through to finish. I would really appreciate some help along the way.

I'll put a more detailed outline together in the next few days.

Knowledge evolves over time. An correct answer today may not be applicable a few years from now. New products, procedures and tools change things.

Plus, I like reading the same threads over again. I usually know the answers :-)

I'm up for it---> While my input tends to be harsh sometimes I believe it's informative and usually correct

Gotta be careful what you wish for. If you stop and look closely, you will realize that the same questions come back over and over and within a very short period of time, if you eliminate the Q repeats, thus forum will be totally dead except the "what did you do to your 997 today" type question.

It has been said, but things evolve and opinions change with experience and time. I don't see the logic in opening a 10 year old thread, just in case an update or an edit has been done towards the end of the suject, 7 years ago!!!!

I believe the better parctice would be to pass on questions you are tired of reading and/or responding, while allowing others to continue learning and exploring new possibilities.

But be warned that this place can become very dead after such a decision. The activity here is what is interesting to any business seeking exposure, kill the activity and watch the businesses walk.

Thank you - there are a lot of good idea and practices to take from that thread.

As to killing the forum - I don't think it will have a huge effect. Newbies will still have questions not answered in the sticky.

They will still have unique situations that they need guidance on - the main difference is they will be coming from an INFORMED point of view.

Here's a first draft of the TOC - suggestions are welcome
