Default 997.2 cooling system first thoughts

With my old 996 C4 when it was very hot out the cooling system was always struggling and seemed to run right at its functional limit. Today in Dallas its 100 degrees and I just got back from a hard run. Water temperature stayed rock solid at 175 F and Oil temp ranged between 200 and 205. No sweat. Porsche obviously made great improvements in this generation.

Nice! I've found that the oil temp needle nudges up to 225 when I'm stuck in a lot of traffic

Yea, this was no bad traffic just pushing it on open roads. How has your car been running since the inspection?

997.2 C4S PDK ...

The water temperature is a dummy gauge. They all run at 175 all the time. It's meaningless.

Running in the mountains with thin air and high revs and high loads I can see oil temps of 275. Cool rainy evenings near sea level the oil temp won't go over 180.

A good cooling system regulates the temperature. I have no illusions ... The 997.2 cooling system is highly insufficient. I plan to add the third radiator this winter. We'll see ...

Wayne ive been really happy with mine over the past 2 weeks. Its a good mod. Lemme know when you want to get into it. We might be able to use the same template for the center grille.

I’ve thought of adding the 3rd radiator for those fun runs where it gets up to 275 to help cool. Any downsides to adding this? It’s my main car, drive it once a week usually to store or small errands. Car is kept in 70 degree garage. Any downsides?

No downsides. Its dropped a solid 15 degrees on the oil temp (no change on the water temp since thats not an actual gauge). I would get to 240-245 if I pushed mine hard and 225 was avg if I was running through the gears above 4k, which is everyday. Now I need to work hard to get it to 220.

Im planning on doing a formal writeup on it, I just havent had the time.

General thought to buy the 997.1 package and make it work for a 997.2?

Yep, I have it too - was part of the RUF supercharger kit since the extra performance needed extra cooling capability. I've never seen an oil temp higher than 225 but the Driven DT40 oil I use will support temps as high as 300 without significant breakdown so I don't worry about it.

FWIW I’ve found that the analog oil temp gauge in the cluster runs about 20-25°F higher than actual.

Even with a new sending unit that gauge is erratic. How do you measure your oil temps? I have a third radiator, new condensers, and a low T-stat and my water temps are in the low 180s. If you do it with a durametic pro (I’ve never tried) I didn’t think one could access oil temps via obdii

My Cobb Tuning Accessport reads it out. I’ve got it mounted next to the A-pillar so I can monitor these levels while I’m driving.

That's a lot. Where is the sensor that the Cobb unit uses to take the reading? If its the same sensor how do you know which is correct?

I don't see how the oil temperature can be lower than the coolant temperature.

Think ... Thermodynamics. What you are cooling won't be less than what you are using to cool it (and vice versa for heating the water with the oil ... The water has to be cooler).

In other words ... IMHO your displays don't add up.
