Are 997.1 and 997.2 modern cars?

I’d say the 997 is an older modern car.
For example, I just got a new set of tires put on my 997.1 and the tech wound up swapping the front rims left to right.
A couple of miles down the road, the car notices this, asks if I got new tires, and proceeds to relearn the setup.
That’s modern.

Love the no TPMS.... best no option EVER !! sweet spot as others have mentioned when it comes to this era of vehicle progression ..... lets face it the new 911's as fast as they are pretty much drive themselves...
I am an old school capable driver ... Don't need back up cameras , lane change sensors , park assist , PDK or traction control also for that matter , power seats , windows etc ...screw all of it ....To me a fully optioned out car has nothing but a stick .... I own a Model X also (wife's car) so go figure all that crap is novel and ok but as the saying goes keep it simple stupid home is where the heart is a flat 6 and a stick.

Is the 997 modern?
This totally depends on your definition of “modern” and what that word means to you.
To me, the 997 is “modern” in all the good ways and none of the bad ways. It’s probably one of the most reliable internal combustion performance cars made. Mezger, Bosch engine management, etc., etc. Yes, I too upgraded the PCM to a current 2020 aftermarket Android Auto compatible digital media center.. That’s something that will always need upgrading every few years to keep current. What will the 991 and 992 owners do? Im not so sure the PCMs on those newer cars are so easily updated.

TPMS, back up cameras, lane change sensors, park assist power windows or power seats DO NOT impact driving experience or performance of car so not sure why that even matters
Modern, high end and exotic sports cars do not drive themselves. They keep people, even perhaps those I would sign off as advanced drivers, from getting hurt or having bad outcomes over small, silly lapses or poor traction situations. We are also not really talking about a car with tremendous capabilities with the 997, but cars with the performance envelopes being reached by perhaps the 997.2 "Turbos" and the base model 991.2s and 992s need some form of traction control more than you may realize regardless how well you think you can drive.
Traction control does NOT impact your driving experience. I data logged many laps in 911s with it off and on and PSM does an excellent job over not being overly invasive. If it is bothering you in a 997 or newer 911, you may need to work on car control skills a bit.
pdk v. manual . . . hop in a car with very high performance levels and then have this discussion. I agree that a manual is fitting in Miatas, S2000s, older, slower NA 911s, air cooled 911s and slower momentum type sports cars.
My manual transmission skills for years gave me advantages over other racers and I converted to new dual clutch technology as it is simply more fitting with the performance level and driving experience offered by the newer, more high performance vehicles. A manual may work in a NA 996/997s, but starts feeling a bit retarded, cumbersome and out of place in newer high end or exotic sports cars with high performance thresholds. Not much experience in base model 997s, but I think the 997.2 GTS is hitting that performance level where pdk starts to fell fitting.

Modern cars are based on a persons age. My father law thinks modern is automatic, power steering and brakes, and A/C. To me airbags and ABS and traction control. To my kids iPhone connectivity and tech. My guess is next gen it all has to be screens and no buttons.
So to me 997 modern. To my kids no.

The word "modern" as it applies to cars is very subjective. Porsches will always be ahead in technical innovations. Think about it. 20-year-old 996 cars had navigation, ABS, Traction control, front/side airbags, self-dimming rearview mirrors, heated seats, parking sensors, immobilizers, HID lights, etc.
Oh, just realized the original factory infotainment centers didn't have integrated Apple Carplay. Guess they're NOT modern. ha!

My take on it is that this is even dubmer the the GT versus Sports Car comparison that insecure people, with what they apparently subjectively perceive as inferior cars throw around to make themselves feel better about their cars/purchase.
A 997 may also seem "not modern" to a 25 year-old and very modern to a 55 year old.

Well Doug H, we can always count on you to throw out reaction-generating comments! The GT vs Sports Car debate is in fact 100% legitimate, and NO, it does NOT make anyone an insecure person to have an opinion on the issue. Many cars in general, and the 911 specifically, have absolutely been transitioning from sports car to GT coupe. I think you probably know that. But I have to agree with you on the age perspective. I think you nailed that one. To me, the 997 is still a "modern" car, in the context of all cars on the road, but to a young person, it most likely is viewed as a dinosaur. I'm fine with that, just like I'm sure any 993 or 964 owner is!

The car is modern, but it has an analog feel. That's what matters to me. I want a car that has safety features, but I want it to feel analog.

If I want to cover long stretches with more than two people at a 'comfortable' speed all day long, it rocks.

Il 997 è un mix di moderno e tradizionale. Per fortuna non è contemporaneo.
