If it has an OBD port it’s modern. That’s my definition.

A 997 may also seem "not modern" to a 25 year-old and very modern to a 55 year old.

They're both in the sweet spot of when cars became modern but still retained the things that make older cars fun to drive. It's not just the 997, it's most cars from the early 2000s. Newer cars are obviously better, but better doesn't necessarily mean more fun to drive.

Having a Pioneer radio with Android auto puts my 997.1 into modern world, because of that, it feels current to me. At no time ever, do I feel like I'm driving an old car.

The only feature in newer cars that makes them feel more "modern" to me are the safety features. Some form of adaptive breaking really should be standard moving forward.
Barring safety, the 997.2 feels very modern to me. The steering and feedback was arguably better than the generation to follow. I am not a fan of the trend giant screens in cars and I think the .2 has a great middle ground.

The relevant question to me is whether or not the car is contemporary.
Happy to say it is not. That's precisely why I have it.
To me, contemporary = crap.

The feature I want new cars to have is a light sensor in the rear bumper that when they see 3 blinks of my headlights, it checks the radar sensor on the right side to see if it's clear and automatically moves over - how awesome would that be? That would keep me from having to pass them on the right or on onramps when they're driving in the left lane the exact same speed as the person next to them - for miles.
My newest car is a 2009.and I don't want anything newer.

I believe there are plenty of stories to be shared regarding near misses thanks to self braking. Not to say that your wrong, most of those cases likely were caused by distracted driving. In my opinion adding some sensors and code is much easier than changing human behavior. Don't get me wrong; I am not looking for self-driving cars. I just would not like to receive another call hearing that a friend was hit on there bicycle.
