I have only once. It was in my S4 Avant. I had picked up some visiting business partners who were in town from Australia to do a plant tour. The gas light came on but the trip computer said I had 25 miles to go. I was turning into the gas station and the engine sputtered and died. At least I had help pushing the car to the pumps!

Bummer and I never ran out of gas on my cars. On my motos, it has happened several times. This is good to know that you can last orange mark can get that much mileage. How long did AAA take? With .5 miles till the nearest exit, wouldn't a quick jog to that exit seem faster? That is if that exit didn't have a gas station there?

Made me think of late 90’s when my daily was 3 series. I was working in Scotland when my wife called and said how many miles can I go in your car when the orange light comes on. I said what orange light. Oh - the one for gas gauge.

When I went to an overseas plant for work that was not the main reason I required them to provide a local cell phone lol.

Sounds like you frequently let it run way down - PSA - that's not good for your car, as a low gas tank and a strong fuel pump work together to suck up all of that debris and sediment that is in the gas from the pump (and the underground tanks) to get into your fuel lines, clogging little filter screens and other bits in the system. If you've ever cleaned a gas tank, you will see all of the sediment in the bottom that accumulates over time. Low gas conditions cause it to get sucked up into the fuel system. Over time, you can have a problem. It doesn't hurt occasionally, but I never go less than a 1/4 tank for the most part.

The pump in the tank is partially cooled by the surrounding fuel too, which is the other reason not to let it get that low.

I ran out of gas once in a Saab Turbo. For some reason that car did not like Mobil fuel and as I passed the only exit within range before I'd end up running out, the only station they had was a Mobil. Should have bought 2 gallons and topped up with something else. My 1 hour wait for AAA did net me 5 free gallons of gas though, which on a college student budget, may have actually been worth the wait.
