Sounds like possible worn bearings in one or more of the Belt Pulleys but they usually have a "squealing" sound - Yours sound like a low tone grind.
Others with more mechanical knowledge will chime in.
Hope it's minor.

To isolate the sound to "pulley" (belt driven) related, or not, temporarily remove the serpentine belt and run the engine for a few minutes. With the belt off you can then check each rotating "thing" for feel-by-hand (lateral play, axial play, "smoothness", amount of resistance to rotation) and noise.

Pulley was what I was thinking but hoping someone can help pinpoint. Thanks

This is great.. keep the motor running while checking? Looks like the belt removal is one of the easiest DIY jobs on the 997 so I can definitely tackle that one myself.

Yes, run engine for few minutes while listening for the weird sound (or no longer hearing it). If you're very careful you can use an automotive stethoscope to try to isolate the sound whether the belt is on or off. Be careful physically and sound-wise - the stethoscope can really focus the sound and might hurt your hearing.

pulley, get a stethoscope, or take belt off and feel all the pulleys, you will probably find a sloppy one.

Here's the belt webbing diagram. Ribbed side runs on ribbed pulleys and smooth side runs on smooth pulleys.

This is for a 997.1

Peel the serpentine belt off and give all the pullies a spin ...Shouldn't take long to find the culprit being that's pretty noisy ..

Sounds like I have play in both the AC and Alternator pulleys?

Bearings in Pulleys are worn
