This spring, 6000 miles and 2 oil/filter changes later, we found non-ferrous metal particles in the oil filter and significantly more in the sump. Bore scope showed scoring in all cylinders, most severe in 1 & 3. Engine most likely requires full rebuild but many parts are backordered. Sorry to hear the news.
Another 997.2 with Bore Scoring. I have seen several Posts with 997.2's with Bore Scoring and as the 997.s cars rack up miles I believe the % will rise.
In summary and my thinking for the past few years, buying a 997.1 or 997.2 with higher miles (80K-110K) that has clean cylinder walls and excellent PPI is probably better insurance regarding engine health.
This is why I purchased my 107K C4 last year. If these cars are babied and extremely well cared for/garaged/serviced/etc higher miles is a great way to go - Saves some $$ and more peace of mind on 997 ownership.
I'm wondering if higher mileage 997's with clean cylinders will fetch a premium soon?? Fingers crossed

Sorry this happened to you. Seems a little weird that all this scoring happened over the last 6,000 miles, not that it changes anything. Did you ever see pictures of the cylinders from the alleged pre purchase bore scope or were you just given verbal results? Best of luck on the eventual rebuild.

Definitely, but only cars with high quality rebuilt engines.

It is entirely possible to have severe asymptomatic scoring, with clean oil analysis.
I'm starting to think the cold climate cars only is incorrect.
The main problem with continuing to drive with bore scoring, is the particles can destroy other bits of the engine.
I am told a common deficiency of the oil analysis is for "large" but still microscopic particles. If they are big enough then you see them in the filter, is they are very small or dissolved in the oil the analysis will pick them up, inbetween no so much.
Scope it!

Blackstone's lab can detect particles up to 5 micron. The large stuff will either be trapped in the filter or reside in the sump.

All this Bore Scoring talk so of course this morning my 997.2 throws a CEL and sounded like it was misfiring.....off to the mechanic. Will report back. Time to put more miles on the 996.

FYI- The reason for the OP is that I was looking at a 29k mi 07 3.6l car. Among other factors, b/c of the extremely low miles I have decided to pass. BTW the car is on BAT.
Sorry if I hit a nerve.

In my opinion, this is actually the biggest problem. I can therefore only urgently recommend that you address the issue of IMS and wear at an early stage and carry out a high-quality general overhaul or repair, even if the engine is still running. Engine damage is not bad per se, but if the block suffers from sunlight penetration and there is no used engine available, this is really a disaster if you love your car and want to drive it. Another option is to buy a defective engine if you have the opportunity and do the revision.

All this only if you want to keep your car till the end :-)

I have a 997 S Launch Car for sale. Great driver example. Just had local dealer perform bore scope (with photos) that showed no signs of wear. PM if interested. Located in Knoxville.

These engines can suffer from overexposure to sunlight??? Is there some kind of special sunscreen lotion available?

Maybe that explains the factory spraying Cosmoline on the block.

Being a paid member, you should post it for sale in the Marketplace and the post a link to the ad and a single photo here.

997 Launch edition is the best 997.1 to own IMO.
