2008 Porsche Targa 4S and 2021 Audi TT RS
I really need some guidance. I have a like-new 2021 Audi TT RS with 400 miles. I had planned to keep this car for a very long time based on the limited number in the market and how it handles and the practicality (hatch, storage, etc.). I happened upon a pristine (looks like new) 2008 Targa 4s 6-speed example with 18,000 miles (color - black) that really impressed me with the sound (has a fister exhaust system), handling, fun factor with the 6-speed manual shifting and the wonderful sunroof and hatchback. My dilemma is the only way I can purchase the Targa is if I trade in my TT RS along with about $12k in cash. I am somewhat worried that I will regret getting rid of the TT RS, but I don't think I am going to find another 997 Targa in this condition and low mileage for some time (certainly not locally). And trading in essentially a brand new car for a 15 year old car. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I should think about this in terms of future value, depreciation, collectability, etc. If I purchase the Targa, I plan to keep it for a very long time as the start of my 997 collection (also looking to purchase a 997.1 Turbo with a trade-in of my 991.2 convertible). Thank you!

I don't know what your needs and objectives are, but why not keep the TT, pass on the Targa, and buy the Turbo. I'm not in a position like yours, but I would have no interest (nor enough miles to drive) to own both the Targa and Turbo at the same time.

Sit tight.
991.2 is the new 997. A few mods and it'll be as quick as the 997tt
997 Targa is cool, but not fast, and the glass roof may not be problem free

Anything after the 997 will never be a 997. 991 feels completely different. Steering isnt the same, feels like a larger car, too many screens and too fancy inside to have that classic 911 feel, etc. The speed isn't as important as the driving experience so I understand why you're planning to trade your 991.
Get the Targa. It's more iconic, more unique, and cooler.

Long term the 997 should do much better depreciation wise than the TTRS, however there is more potential for a big repair bill in the 997.
It really comes down to what you want. For me the TTRS is auto only and holds no appeal to me because of that, sad because if this generation of the TTRS was manual I would be all over it.
I bought a new 2001 180HP TT Quattro Manual new about 20 years ago, and have had 5 GTI’s over the years.
I was an early adopter of the DSG in the MK5 GTI, bought it on Valentines Day 2006, 2 weeks after the first one hit US dealers.
In October of that same year I drove to Amarillo to trade cars with another forum member who had a manual GTI.
He had just had knee surgery and couldn’t drive the car without pain.
I lasted a whole 8 months before I was back in a manual.

I have a soft spot for the TTRS after owning an RS3 and TTS. Fantastic motor. I would keep the TTRS and get the 997 turbo and call it a day.
Im not going to lie I still look at used RS3s and TTRS's.
Coming from a 991.2 also, your plan of trading for a 997.1 turbo is a no brainer.
