997.1 Tiptronic vs Manual
Hi all
I'll be daily driving the car. I am considered tiptronic with a steering wheel swap for actual shifter paddles from DCT Motorsports. I'd take the car to the track maybe a couple times a year and enjoy backroads etc regularly. What are your thoughts?
I live in the Bay Area and am used to driving manual in traffic. Ive had a 91' MR2 and a 01' eclipse. This will be my first rear engine car.
I was originally considering a 996.2 but they are similar in price and my uncle tells me to spend a little bit more for a 997.
996 C4S vs 997.1 is also on my mind.

Just all depends what you prefer. I prefer Manual Transmission.
997 nicer looking that 996.

Tiptronic owner here. If you are considering a Tiptronic then make sure the car has Sport Chrono at the very least. This would give you the "Sport" button in the center stack. This wakes up the throttle response and the Tiptronic shifts much nicer (crisper) using Manual mode and "Sport" mode. Without Sport mode the Tip shifts a bit slow and mushy.

The Tiptronic in my Cayenne is fine....in my Cayenne. No way I'd own a 997 with a Tiptronic, but also wouldn't consider a PDK either. My sports cars need 3 pedals. I reinforced this with myself when I sold a annual 928 for an Auto 928 that was a much nicer car. The manual was a lot more fun to drive. The auto is my DD and with many other manual Porsches it's fine, but if I had only my 997, it would have to be a manual, and both my 997s are.

I'd go for the 997, while the 996 is nice the front is just to bland to me (personal opinion). I would buy a manual over a tip...but if it were PDK it would be a tossup, depending on other options.

I've had manuals all of my life, my current 997 is a Tip and I love it. There is a learning curve.
It took me about a year to get used to it and to be able to predict the shifts. There's a slight delay between asking for a shift and getting one, but this shortens up under load. When I first got it I tried to drive it like a manual and that resulted in a disappointing drive. If you keep your foot in it it shifts as quickly if not quicker than a manual. Downshifting is sublime. I don't track mine but do frequent "spirited" drives in NORCAL.
- You have 5 speeds, not 6. At the top of 3rd, you're up over 80 and you get there QUICKLY.
- In everyday driving, it starts in second
- If you leave it to shift on its own in everyday driving, it will short shift around 2500 rpm. I drive mine in "manual" mode so it never shifts below 3k.
- It's a bombproof transmission used in a number of cars/brands.
- The 997.1 Turbo Tip is the fastest 997.1 according to Porsche
You will always have folks who just insist on a manual and that's fine. I had an M3 manual for 12 years before my 911, and many manuals before that. I'm very happy with my Tip.
