Ha yeah I was wondering the same thing, seems like this would be impossible without a pump.

I've never heard of a 997 having syncro problems.
Definitely not common, but does happen. Seen it and pretty sure I read about such things on here over the years. I am probably just more sensitive to the issue since I have happen a few times and I have to deal with such issues in older 911s.

Seemed like the 996 had early synchro issues as well. I had 3 996TTs and 2 of them had sticky downshift and upshift maybe into 2nd. Been 20 years so cannot recall, but as good as they are Porsche manuals can still fail or need rebuild as well.

Well I've ordered Mobilube, new transmission fluid plugs and washers, and located a place with a lift. All there is left to do is wait and keep my fingers crossed! Will keep you guys posted.

Hey all, quick question. I went through my shop manual and ordered what I thought were the right bolts for the transmission fluid change, was going to just use new plugs while I was at it. I ordered these:
Expansion plug - https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...or-90021900130
Crush washer - https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...th-90012311830

These don't look right when I am watching this video on replacing the fluid -

In this video
, the bolt looks like what I bought:

What gives? Are the drain and fill plugs 10mm hex like what I bought, or more like the first picture?

2009 C2S 188K miles

The first video is for a 997.1... a different engine than my 2009 C2S.
That second video is for a 2011 GT3... that is very different engine than my 9A1 C2S .

The fill holes are capped with what I don't know... the drain plug is the same as the oil sump and the LN magnetic can be used in both (I did) if not a GT3/Mezger engine. For the fill... it doesn't matter, any good tech will have the wrench/bit to fit... you will be re-using this.

Again, use the lower fill hole... on a .2 transmission there are two.. on a .1, I don't know. If your tech accidentally uses the top, as mine did.... no harm was done as long as you don't try to fill till dribble.

The plug you or someone, is pointing too is not a standard hex but a torx. I never saw a fill plug with a torx... although it is probably less prone to stripping.

Sorry for the confusion, but this whole 997 thread gets whacky with these different engines. Before I order parts, I first... always first... check for the correct and original Porsche part number for my model car here:

https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessor...artscatalogue/

If you want a magnetic one, then here, else there is no need to replace your existing plug unless it is damaged. The washers can be purchased off of amazon for pennies... if you need one fast, auto parts stores sell them too... and there really is nothing special about these washers.

Now I have some coming from Suncoast, some here from FCP, and some coming from LN haha. Hopefully we will have the right ones somewhere.

Update - first day driving on new trans fluid (Mobilube PTX 75W-90 from Suncoast) and shifting felt brand new. Nothing notchy 1st thru 6th, even when cold. Second day went for a longer drive and noticed getting into second was a little sticky, but overall a huge improvement. No more grinding at all going into fourth when cold/semi-cold, which was the worst of it for me.

Knock on wood I won't be tearing down the transmission any time soon.

Exactly. That first drive, knowing I saved somewhere in five figures, was pretty sweet
