Default Original tires -- tell me I'm stupid

I want to throw my original 19s on my car after running 18s for quite a while. Just looking for a change in look and the 18s are feeling kind of squishy.
The 19s probably have 5k miles max on them. Tons of tread. They've been sitting in a climate controlled garage.
The tires are original date code '09
I'm tempted to run them for the summer. Seems like a waste (and risking rim damage) to throw them out. I know that the tire police are going to tell me the rules here. My question is whether anyone has experience, what the side effects are?

My guess is they'll have hardened -- especially the "skin" and will take a while to gain grip. Beyond that, what are the other risks? I don't really think there's increased risk of puncture or blowout.

Anyhow -- ready for my beating. Let me have it.

The most important safety system outside of your brakes is not a place to say "eh, what the hell, it's probably fine..."

Costco will sell you a set of Michelin PS4S for your 19s, just go buy a set and be done with it.

14 year old rubber? Not even once.

Go get some new shoes.

I wouldn’t do it. I have no proof a blowout is more likely, but I’d think that rubber being more brittle and less flexible could cause a blowout easier.

If you’re driving to and from the store at 35mph, you’ll be fine. If you’re pushing your car at all, get fresh PS4S.

Porsche recommends tire replacement after 6 years. I follow that.

Your asking a question I am sure you already know the answer to. Bad Idea.

- Increased rate of Catastrophic failure "Blowout"
- Reduced levels Of Grip

Get rid of the tires. My tires have 7 years on the fronts but plenty of tread. I just drove it this past Sunday for the first time this year and could feel the lack of grip. New PS4S go on it Friday.

"You're stupid" - hey, I'm just following directions

But seriously, not a good idea.

Yes, "great job" following the instructions (seriously)

I'm sure lots of people are tempted to do exactly this. Tons of tread; they "look fine". "What a waste". Could probably get into trouble even on city streets as evidenced by that article. Thanks for the kick in the butt, guys.

You've already got the right answer but I'm genuinely curious if they are showing any signs of dry rot at all. You should still replace them.

I mean, objectively not a good idea but I've done worse.

Couple years ago I picked up an e92 m3 for a daily. Car had 10-year old tires so I knew I had to replace them, but they seemed “fine” on test drives. The first on ramp after buying the car pushing it a bit, nothing gonzo maybe 60%, the car gets completely sideways. So completely unexpected, like hitting ice, except this was summer in CA. Couple day later on the freeway, I encountered one of those 80 mph down to zero situations. I’d left room so no big deal, except this time the car is slipping and sliding and not stopping at all. Made it with a couple feet to spare. So, yeah, old tires are dangerous.

I used them up in a safe place doing some drifting and burnouts I wouldn’t normally ever do. It was good practice learning the dynamics of the car, kind of like a wet skid pad without the wet, so maybe use them for that.

Ingenious use for “expired” tires.
I have three sets on wheels that need a decent burial ceremony.
