Wink new on 997 carrera 4 . suggestions ??

hello troop ...

have had always air cooled porsches
I am about to buy a 2008 carrera 4 in very good shape under 40.000 miles.
it would be my first liquid cooled 911.

is not an S , it is plane carrera 4.

Any suggestion / a word of advise / recommendation/ warning that I should pay attention before I close the deal ???
its iMS a problem on late 2008 carrera 4 model ? for example ??

it is manual, in very good shape.
I will make a PPI just in case, but rennlist has been always a source of wisdom to me.

A manual 997.2 is too much money for me.

Appreciate the help !!!!

thanks !!

Just make sure your PPI includes a Borescope inspection.

Low mileage 997.1 is a nice find and a borescope should a priority on the PPI as the 3.6 can also get scoring. The IMS on the 06+ are the larger/upgraded bearing.

Good luck and hope everything goes well.

Congrats! I love my 2006 C4.
Bore Scoring is much more prevelant on the 3.8L "S" engine however some 3.6L engines score so must get Bore Scope Inspection along with PPI.
Since its a manual also make sure PPI includesthe DME Over Rev Report.
Keep us posted.

The discussion that will never go away. Bottom line is that a 2008 has a much improved IMS bearing over the early 2005's (unless updated). Some say that the IMS is a "non issue" with later model 997.1's. I've always said that I think this is misleading for those seeking advice and total 100% peace of mind. Yes,way less of a chance of IMS failure of mid year 2005 through 2008 with the larger bearing but there are still documented IMS failures of the larger bearing. Very rare to be sure but they have happened.

Bottom line is that the only way to completely protect against IMS failure is to get an -09 .2 car or later where the IMS was eliminated and no longer an issue. BTW....the advice given on bore scoping is well taken imo. Good luck with the purchase. You'll love it.

Larger bearing failures have almost all happened during track use at sustained high RPMs. The odds of having a large bearing IMS failure on a street 997.1 are super low.

Drive the car into the harbor and check for leaks, these cars have been known to not be water tight from the factory.

also something something IMS something bore scope something melting interior plastic something question that's been asked ten thousand times

I agree. Based on the reported failures of the updated/larger bearing they rarely happen in cars that just see regular street use. Those I've seen involved hard track use and/or regular "spirited" driving. I know someone who describes his 997 driving style as "spirited". I've driven with him and some would probably use a different word than spirited.
