911 going electric?
I saw prototype 911's with no tailpipes.
Every few years Porsche comes out to Colorado to test upcoming models, and they stay in a hotel right next to where I work in Golden, CO. Yesterday I was riding my bike up a popular climb just west of Golden and about ten, all blacked out, 911's passed me. They were clearly this test crew with duct tape around the car and their jerry-rigged CB radio antennas. I noticed a few of them had no tailpipes, which makes me suspect they are all electric. In the spot in the rear where the other had pipes, these had a slightly protruding box.

Maybe they're doing emissions testing. Porsche recently said the 911 will be ICE "as long as possible" which is an interesting way to say nothing. Personally, I'm excited for an electric future. I love ICE, but how power is made isn't the exciting part to me. It's the experience of power being delivered, the experience of the car providing feedback to the driver about the driving experience. That's what makes me excited about cars, and that's the experience Porsche has always been so good at delivering. Looking forward to what they do by fully electrifying their flagship model.

Clearly we prioritize different things. Your defining your relationship to cars based on a specific method of producing power is likely to leave you feeling pretty frustrated as the industry changes around you, though.

OP, did you hear anything from the cars? Any exhaust note or was it the familiar electric taycan sound?

The next generation or 2 should still be ICE engines. ICE will remain around for some time to come. (moved from 2030 to 2035 currently with exemptions for E-Fuels)
There are some exciting points to electrification, immediate power, simplicity of the drivetrain. That is about it.
Trying to solve Global emissions with an electrified fleet.....the current process isn't conducive nor effective at all.
Progress....sometimes its a step forward and sometimes its not.

Someone important will come to their senses and realize electric cars are a loser of an idea...no car Company wants to build them and who the F*ck wants to drive one...not me.
Another boondoggle among many for the US of A and their corrupt leadership...it'll end in 2024! Hallelujah!

Not me....hate the idea and I hate electric cars...just stupid....makes no sense.....Porsche has already gone down many roads I don't like so if they do this...I won't be surprised but I will be disappointed! And where the power is made and how it's made is the only point!

I wouldn't be completely against an alternative energy / power source - however going with lithium battery electric powered as they currently are (and are likely to be for the foreseeable future) is not a solution. It's a stop-gap short term ploy meant to assuage pressure from the government.
Then there's the concern with buying into technology that ages rapidly and is dead ended by the manufacturers - just like it has with virtually all consumer electronics over the past few decades. So you buy the electric 911 when it comes to market - and 10 years later it has to go to the recycler. No thanks.

I'm with you on this Tom.

Not saying yea or nay here, but Porsche had a full electric GT4 running on the track at Reunion that was holding its own with the 919 (definitely) and 963 (sort of). The sound was a bit hideous. But it sure looked like it could be a trip to drive. The acceleration advantage was visible.

I have to agree with Wayne, as I too watched the GT4E scream around Laguna Seca like a banshee this afternoon. I was very impressed. That said, it was only the ICE cars that illicit the fun, emotion and verbrado that I like about cars. I’ll continue to vote with my ICE purchases as long as possible.

IMO EVs have their place for some folks and once range and charging networks mature I am looking forward to replacing our daily driven vehicles with them.
The Germans have a very robust charging network, pretty jealous of them in that regard.
On the other point, this is a car forum, not Facebook.

not a fan of electric they have a bad empty feeling to drive in my opinion, but after filling up in SoCal at 6.30+ a gallon, a hybrid of some kind might make some sense
That being said, I am sure car making will find some loop hole to sell new ICE cars
