I tried making my 997 sound air cooled like my 993. After many set ups what worked is fabspeed headers, fabspeed exhaust and gundo hack (yes on the fabspeed exhaust) no highway drone. Nice pops when I change gears from 1 to 2. And nice raspy sound low speeds.

Interesting, do you have any sound clips?

That's essentially my setup except I have Fabspeeds Valvetronic mufflers that they haven't made for a decade, which is a gundo'd Fabspeed but with a PSE valve in it and their 200 cell X-cat.

A ton of great suggestions in this thread, so I don't want to detract from anyone's views. I do however want to add a bit of info about the X-pipe vs. Cross over debate.

Here is an old-school comparison we did to show the benefit of the X on the flow itself. One of the main advantages of an X-pipe is that it can increase horsepower and torque by improving exhaust flow. This is due to the fact that an X-pipe helps to balance the exhaust pulses from each bank of cylinders, which allows for a more efficient scavenging effect. This results in a smoother, more efficient flow of exhaust gases. Additionally, an X-pipe can produce a more aggressive exhaust note. Crossover tubes may not offer the same performance gains as an X-pipe, and they may not produce the same aggressive exhaust note.

Just curious, why don't you guys sell the valvetronic versions of the maxflo muffler anymore for 997.1?

Would love to hear a cold start with the valves open!

The valves need vacuum to open so the initial bark has them open but then they'll close almost immediately and I'd have to open them with the button again so will sound a little odd, but I'll see what I can do. Cold start will also be in a small single garage where that car lives so will be a bit echo-y.

The X-pipe is also most effective with equal length long tube headers as those sequence the exhaust pulses so you don't have exhaust turbulence where they pass through the X section, which is also what helps with the scavenging effect to speed up the exhaust.

PM you some videos. And to clarify I have the fabspeed maxflo. I didn’t include that on my first comment.
