Kazoo sound on start ?
Occasionally, upon morning start, I get a kazoo sound upon starting.
Brief maybe half second long. Lower heavier sound than the kazoo you just thought of. Sounds like above the engine towards the rear.
Dont think its timing chain. Not really worried about it as my indy stays on top of things - just curious.
AOS ? One of some maintenance items that once any of them are required, planning on having them all done together, while in there. 87,000 miles.
As always . . .TIA

I believe that sound is the starter pinion - When the pinion gear doesn't retract it makes that sound. I noticed a month ago I have same thing going on every once and a while.

May be a squeal from a belt pulley or the tensioner. I get an occasional noise as you describe and have purchased a pulley set, the tensioner and new belt for install soon. My noise comes and goes. Haven’t heard it in a while.

Seems like a bad bearing would be less intermittent and more progressive. Plausible though.
Belt/tensioner replaced a few years back after it failed - no warning. No squeal.
Good info to consider - I love a puzzle.

My water pump made noise at startup and then stopped. I suspect it had to do with heat buildup. My sound was more of a chirp.
Peace

I'm betting it is starter.

If the starter Bendix, it should make the same type of grinding sound it would make if you were to activate the starter with the engine running. Just replaced a starter in a 944 that would do this as soon as the engine fired as the flywheel would spin the starter for a half second. Could be though.
AOS would have other symptoms like smoking.

Starter is logical. It happens when the engine starts. Along with 100 other parts that have been sitting idle for a day or two . . .

What is it with p-cars and very long socket extensions for starters?? My 964 required one to access the starter, but from the tranny, under the car. Impossible otherwise. Not exactly fun even with the right extension.
Guess they figure its no problem when the motor is out - ha.
Thank you RL !
