Default New kindling for the MT vs PDK debate

At the risk of opening old wounds, this article addresses the issue from a 992 perspective:

My 991.1 PDK GTS is a better car in every metric. Faster, Better engine, interior quality, etc but the 997 6 speed is the better car. It emulates everything the article states as the "it" factor. If I had to admit it, the 991 is almost a bit boring.

Funny, but the Road and Track article sounds like Porsche made the 992S 6 speed almost as good as a 997.

Agree with the first comment on the linked article in regards to 6 vs 7 speed. I rarely use gears 4 and 5, mainly 1-2 around town and then 3 to 6 with highway. 4 for passing. 5, sorry hardly know ya.

I don’t know what I would do with 7 speeds.

....except it's bigger and has electric steering, and the ugliest rear spoiler of any Porsche ever when it's deployed.

Good read, thanks for sharing. Sounds like Porsche is doing what it can to keep some fun in the 911 model. It must be nearly impossible to due to federal mandates with safety, epa, and such. Bloated with nannies is the future it seems.

For myself I would break it down to 3 usage categories
1. commute = PDK
2. competition = PDK
3. Weekend or occasional fun car = Manual

They are both good systems. Just choose the best one for your application.

I'm old school ...I want to shift my Porsche 997 in TB color from the past...a car I longed for and never thought I'd own...I also drive an old orange Jeep, 1985 CJ 7 with a stick and 60 mph top speed! And I'm not interested in women under 60...I guess you might say the world has passed me by and that's just fine with me. I feel lucky every single day of my life!

Man, this is me to a tee! Purchased my '06 997.1 C2S manual when I turned 65 back in 2020. Been waiting my whole life for one. My "other" car is an '87 F-150 that my father purchased new. As for the women, well, I also agree. Just got engaged to a wonderful woman who is 61. I'm 68. As they say, "Life is good."

Cheers,

There is a big difference between the 991/992 6-speed and 7-speed. The 6 is a traditional transmission with mechanical engagement with 1:1 correlation between the shift lever and gears. The 7-speed manual is based on the PDK and uses a software abstraction layer that Porsche calls MECOSA (mechanically converted shift actuator). The MECOSA transmission is a dual-clutch automatic that is engineered to work like a traditional manual transmission and "translates the conventional-shift-pattern commands made by the driver into the desired gear engagements within the transmission." For example, first gear is where you'd expect to find fourth and fourth is where sixth should be (see diagram). This article from Car & Driver (https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...ual-enjoyment/) illustrates this.

This is why the 6-spd in the GT cars is generally considered amazing, superior, and feels better, compared to the 7-spd "manuals" in the rest of the 911 range. Although you row your own gears with a 3rd pedal, the 6 and 7-speed manual transmissions in the 991 and 992 generations are more different than just the extra gear.

I like driving over 60 and driving women under 30.

2009 C2S 196K miles

That article is one poorly written piece of sophomoric crap. Cripes, I guess video did kill the writting class.

I don't know why Porsche fights it... They are really killing the fun enthusiasts enjoy. Oh well, the company leadership has bee very successful repositioning the brand up there with Gucci and the like. Enthusiasts make the brand but posers make the money, and I guess as the enthusiasts are dying off, the poser wallet is just too deep and wide.

Peace

I was just about to post something like this, but your comment is more articulate and precise. The manual transmission in the 7 speed is reverse engineered from the PDK with 'clever gears and linkage' to match the shift patterns. On top of that the current M/T apparently will automatically rev match when down shifting (there is no way to disable this) probably designed this way to lessen the chance of stalling (for example, when going really slow (like up a driveway), if the car is about to stall, you press the clutch and the car rev matches so you can slowly re-engage without stalling. Also, there is no way to physically lock out 7th gear. So when downshifting from 6th to 5th, I would lean the shifter to the right (to prevent accidently going into 3rd), but doing so may instead slip into 7th. Not a big deal, but could be annoying. 7th gear is locked out without going into 6th 1st however.

Probably no big deal for many, but I suppose purists may have issues with this design as it is not directly linked like the 6 speeds.
