Default 996 or 997

hey guys, just wanted your feedback.i have owned 4 pcars.2boxsters(one was an s)95 993 and currently a 87 911.i love the 87 and want to keep it.it is a ball to drive and listen to.but i am getting the itch again.how many of you went from a 996 to a 997 and what are your thoughts....i am also thinking of a993 c2s..i just love the older ones...i feel that the new ones will always be there..i was also looking at pics of the 996 and 997..i must admit that owning boxsters and looking at a 996 is not appealing.i do think the 997 looks great,in and out.the front reminds me of the 993.money is an issue(just bought a house)..so a 997 would wait a few years..just wanted you thoughts...thanks

Depends somewhat on how you want to use it, but genreally buy the latest model/best car you can afford.

th, e 997 is better car and chassis than the 996 is all regards...and its better looking imo..but the deals are with the 996, which is the unloved model btn the classic 993 and the much improved , modern 997...for 40k you can get a nice 996 coupe, whereas a used 997 coupe will cost at least 65k...either way, its a win -win....

It's often said (and true IMO).....buy the newest model you can afford. Porsche has made meaningful performance improvements with each new 911.

911<964<993<996<997

This still holds true for the 997 IMHO.

If money is not an issue get the 997. If you'd prefer to spend less there are some great 996's out there.

Good luck

Go with a 997. Looks better with a nicer interior - The S (if you can afford it) gives more bang.

Just selling it for a number of reasons...I really wanted to have my everyday driver be more comfortable and useful(3 kids) and my own business (clients).....

I am also moving to Idaho next summer and just bought an X5 4.8is...very fun to drive, all wheel and multi purpose( skiing, 3 kids, clients, etc)

I have never owned an air cooled P car but know alot of people who do. I have learned over the last few years (and 2 P cars) that horsepower is not everything. Suspension and driver ability can overcome alot!

I really think the 993 is a great value now at around 30k..this will allow me to tinker and mod and track and more tires and on and on....

The 997 is awesome and i do love it but would rather not have an 80k car sitting around to drive once and a while!

There are a bunch of things you can do to the 993 to get it fast and light!

I just love cars and want to try them all!

993 will hold me over for a few years until i can get a used V8 m3!!!

rss...going from a 997,i think you should consider a c2s over a stock 993...the c2s is awesome and is a bit more special...and trust me on one thing, drive the m3 as much as you can before getting rid of your p-car.if you keep your pcar and add the m3, fine.i went from porsche to bmw,and 13 months later i am back in a pcar....bmws are great cars but the over all driving experience in the pcar is just too good...like they say,,"there is no substitute"....good luck

True, every generation of 911 has some type of advantage, but my opinion lies with skipping the 996 and going to the 997. The 993 has enough character to hold you over until the price is right on a 997. Some agree, some don't. But that's what I'd do. The 996 C4S has some sexy lines and wide rear end, but not much of a price delta from the 997.

I was ready to buy my first brand new 911 when they announced they were going to water-cooled engines. When I saw the 996 introduced in several auto magazines I was extremely disappointed with what they did to the headlights and straightening out the curves over the rear fenders.

When I went to the dealership and checked out the interior, I simply said "NO WAY." It looked like they took a pump and inflated the dashboard ... totally cheesy. Even the "lever-up" door latches bugged me. I didn't even test drive one - and I knew that the new engine and suspension was flawless. As much as I love how a Porsche accelerates and corners, I need to feel good about how it looks in my office parking lot after a rough day at work. Overall, the 996 looked like a Japanese car with little German characteristics.

When the Boxter came out I was even more grateful that I didn't buy one, because they looked the same.

Instead I bought an E430: The first time in years MB got a car right themselves.

The day the car magazines came out, I quickly said, "They got it right." I waited a year and bought a 997 C2S Coupe. To me it is flawless.

Paul: Wait for the 998? Why? What could they possibly improve besides putting more horsepower? A hard-top retractable roof would have to be a must if they are to compete with the MB SL. Perhaps widen it another inch? I am 6'1, 230 lbs., some more butt-room couldn't hurt for me.

My only complaints are trivial: The CHEESY key fob (Anyone know if you can upgrade to a different one like the one used for the Cayenne?), no automatic headlight system, they should have had SIRUS, XM and iPod options, and finally a blue-tooth option so you could use ANY type of mobile phone system.

If money is an issue, get a 993 until used 997s become more affordable.

996 fans, fire away...

I've had 3 996s in quick succession, all over the course of an 18 month period. My 997S is superior in every category, except for hard track use when compared to the 996 GT3. As a street car, the 997S wins hands down over each of the 996's I've owned.

Again, from the perspective of a street car, the 997S has been growing on me every day; it has great depth and character, and everything is just, well, *precise*, incredibly refined, accurate, stable, and confidence inspiring under real world driving conditions.

Skip the 996 and get the 997.
