Default L.A. to Vegas

Have to go to Las Vegas in a few days..........would love to drive but getting a flat tire on the way scares the **** out of me;especially since I just got one.I really don 't want to wait for a flaybed in Barstow.Whats your feelings or I am I just paranoid.Anybody buy the spare that came with the 996.I heard that will fit on the 997.

Do not be afraid!!!
Just get in the car and drive

I'am not just saying this since I've done 2 x-country drives, the last being 4,800mi.

Your flat chances are greater drving around the city than out on the open road.

I've got my salesman researching the 996 spare issue for me. I'm with you, there are way too many places still in the wild west that are out of cell range and remote from anything to count on your tires staying together. It's a piece of mind issue for me. If I have to forego a cubic foot of trunk space, so be it.

Hey Woodranch, you need to be more specific and explicit when posting a thread title for future search reference. The subject of your thread is not the LA to Vegas trip, but a Spare Tire for the 997.

The moderators here may move the thread if they think it's off topic just from the title. Do them and us a favor and be more specific in your thread titles. Thanks.

Please post the update if anyone can find a spare tire solution. I've check with my purchasing dealer's part department and I was told that there was not spare for the 997. I believe you can use the 996 spare for the 997. What about the flat tire? Where can we fit it? In the rear seats?

No problem. You're still a newbie. And I apologize for being a bit blunt. I'm just trying to help you get the answers you're looking for.

Reminds me of that scene in Pulp Fiction where John Travolta's character says to Harvey Keitel's character when ordered to go clean the car.

TRAVOLTA: "A please would be nice."

KEITEL: "I want you to get one thing straight here. I'm only here to help you. And if I'm being curt, it's because time is of the essence. So pretty please, with sugar on top, clean the F**king car."

Excellent analogy. Excellent quote. Awesome movie.

Maybe OCBen's handle should be The Wolf.

LOL ... Yeah that was his nickname, the Wolf. Only reason that scene came to mind was because my wife was watching it on HBO over the weekend and I happened to catch that excellent scene. The Wolf in his tux, barking orders, sipping gourmet coffee. ... Simply hilarious.

I have driven to Vegas from Chicago several times in my 996. I don't even carry a spare. Bring a can a fix-a-flat for any nail holes you may get. If you get a blowout, you'll have more than waiting for a flat bed to be concerned about.

When you use that can of fix-a-flat how long can you ride on the tire for?

As OCBen has mentioned, this topic has gotten a lot of visibility lately. Someone provided a nice list of necessary parts to suitably add (and mount) the space-saver spare, to include the jack. My salesman has forwarded that list of PNs to his parts guys and they are researching the numbers and will see about my specific request of having the tire mounted in the trunk when I go to 'collect' the car in May in Zuffenhausen. I expect to be doing a lot of driving for 3 weeks all over Europe and would feel a lot better knowing I have some contingencies in the trunk.

Of course, everyone should routinely carry a 'radial tire repair kit' in their Porsches to quickly fix any nails holes they get, along with a small DC-powered compressor.

Here's the list I got off the Rennlist earlier,--but it is being audited right now for correctness:

996-362-620-02 emergency tire
996-722-101-00 wheel insert
996-721-211-00 scissors jack
999-571-074-30 mounting bolt
999-361-521-00 tire bolt
996-361-411-00 belt
