I am convinced PASM will crap out at some point down the road - just one less thing to worry about. Also, I never used it out of "normal" mode on my 997S.

I have a 2007 A3 - maybe you can PM what you're referring to about the VAG settings.

Chris, if it's for weekend purposes, consider a nice 993 as well. If you're heart's set on a 997 or Cayman, do yourself a favor and at least buy a used one if it truly won't be driven very often!

Between the two? I personally would choose a 997.

I owned a 996 c2 with LSD/PSE and I took a cayman s and a 997 s out on a back to back test drive.

the sales guy was like

'man you are gonna love the carrera'. He was very dissapointed when I was distinctly underwhelmed.

the 997 felt a lot heavier and more gt compared to my light early '99 with PSE. More power was definitely counteracted by less weight and PSE.

The cayman s for me was a revalation, feels like a scalpel to carry more speed through turns rather than the 911 driving style. I also like the cosiness of the cabin - it feels intimate (i'm only 5'10" so if you are a big dude it may be an issue) and the sound of the engine right behind you is excellent.

Another reason I got the cayman was because the wife told me that if I wanted a 2 seater it would have to be NOW!

as it stands right now, I probably wouldn't trade it for any current production porsche (maybe a gt3). If anything I would put the x51 eengine from the 997 in it which would be very close to my idea of motoring nirvana... drive it and see what you prefer, I had had the 911, so having the 'icon' was well out of my system

Test drove New Cayman S and C2 and C2S numerous times, while I liked the Cayman's more neutral handling, it felt confining inside with the engine a few inches behind my back, a fine CPO C2S came along a few weeks later and I am now the proud owner and loving every moment.
I vote for the Carrera.

I've wanted a 911 since I was a kid. I'm also 6 1 and the Cayman is too small inside. I use the back seats a lot too. The Cayman is very nice looking but the heritage and size issue placed me in a C2 Cab. Boy is it fun.

Boy this is me .... I did drive both cars and for me, )6'3" 205#) the Cayman/Boxster was just too tight. I too bought the Carrera Cab and have never thought about it again.

according to the porsche web site its more like 180lbs. It wasn't so much that, it was more the weight distribution....

I drove them both, and bought a slightly used 997S. The Cayman S was very nice, but I enjoy the extra hp of the 911, as well as the interior. I've done three track events so far with it, and I find it an absolute joy on track. There's no doubt the mid-engine layout of the Cayman offers different handling characteristics, which may suit you better. But I really enjoy the 911's grip under acceleration, as well as the braking advantage of the rear weight bias. The 911 really sticks through the turn under throttle, has enough on-throttle understeer for stability, yet responds great to a slight throttle lift to help rotate. Although I have not driven the Cayman on track, I have observed them enough to see that the lack of LSD is a greater issue than in the 997, without the extra rear weight to help keep it planted. It's all personal preference, but don't assume the mid-engine car is going to be better for you, since so much depends on driving style.
