OK, so I'm internet ignorant, but...
What's a "troll," and what do they do to stir up trouble, and how does one know when a troll is operating, etc.?
I ask this after reading "The Ban Thread(s)". Didn't want to insert this in those two threads--I have learned the term "hijacking a thread."
Don't "flame" me--another term I've learned. I've never read "threads" (lurked) in any forums (fora ?) before this one.

In the 997 forum, we've had two types of trolls: the hit-and-run troll who would first post a highly confrontational/provocative comment and then just retreat to observe the outrage (typically something about Boxsters, Corvettes, break-in periods, etc.); and we had the systematic troll who would just continuously provoke and push other members' buttons until they (the trolls) or both would get banned.
The third type frequently observed on Rennlist, the fuel troll, reignites flaming wars when things seem to calm down. That's what you see in the OT rather than in the 997 forum. There are a bunch of other types: agenda trolls, vulgar trolls, contrarian trolls, and so on.

Wow. Interesting. Thanks. I am amazed that there now is sort of a "science" of trolling. After reading that wikipedia link, I can see how a troll-infested forum could scare off newbies with legitimate (to them) questions from asking those questions. I actually hesitated to ask this question, thinking people would think the question too naive/dumb, and I'd get broiled (my term).

On a percentage basis, I believe there are fewer trolls on this board than most others I've checked out. BlueJay, I think you'll find this to be the most helpful, informative Porsche board going - Rennlist is truly a cohesive community of Porsche owners.

Good question, and since I brought up the term, let me give a little bit of additional background beyond the link above.
