Perusing the '09 order guide I've noted the Special Paint is $3,140 while Paint to Sample is $4,315. Two related questions:
1. What is in the special paint to make is worth 4 1/2 times the metallic paint? (I have a bad feeling the answer is 'because Porsche can.') 2. The extra $1,200 for paint to sample seems like a relative bargain. Aside from the production delay, why not pick any color they'll do for the extra amount? I'm beginning to see a Glacier Blue in my future... |

1. Your bad feeling is correct.
2. The delay is the big drawback. 4,300 bucks isn't exactly cheap either, but if you're deciding between that and "special" paint, don't mind the wait, and are really in love glacier blue, then it's sort of a no-brainer.

And keep in mind that paint to sample colors that are uncommon or have not been done before may cause delays of at least 6 months. That being said, I'm going to paint to sample route on my upcoming order.

Paint To Sample is disruption to their production process. You're not paying for 'special' paint necessarily. You're paying to sort of interrupt the production line. They can crank out silver after silver, and black after black, but when a Paint To Sample arrives to be done they have to take all the time to clear their lines, and to get set up for a one-off job. It's a "disruption fee." Also, with some of the more obscure colors (perhaps from Porsche's past), they actually have to go through testing to see if that color will be compatible with today's manufactured parts. Our cars are made from aluminum, steel, plastic, urethane, and a variety of other specialty materials. Each of them takes paint a different way.
In the grand scale of things, a Paint To Sample order is a relative bargain. Name a couple of other auto manufacturers who will even ACCEPT a Paint To Sample order? Most of them will toss Henry Ford's old saying back in your face. "It can be any color as long as it's black."

Does anyone have any links or photos of tangerine (the paint color, not the fruit)?
I've seen it variously appear to be a rich, "bright yet dull" (if that makes any sense) reddish color with high orange content (but still, highly red too); as well as very orange looking, depending on the light or the photo exposure. What I thought was tangerine may not be, given that "orange thread" linked to above. Would like to know whether my original thoughts are correct; trying to determine whether tangerine is the correct identifier for my fave porsche color. |

Actually, I happen to be a PM,--program manager, in a manufacturing company. We make satellite dishes.
