Default Challenge # 1

You have $50K to spend on a reliable vehicle new or used, that has to be capable of carrying 4 passengers, and an object that is 4' x 4' x 6" that has to fit into the trunk space without folding seats, and is easily accessible. The vehicle has to be able to cope with city driving/parking and long runs of 4 hours or more, and cope with midwest winters with snow up to 6" deep.

What are the options?

hmmm... not entirely sure of the trunk space but I'd look at an A6 Avant.

I really love our pepper and it kicks *** in the winter. It's one of the 06 Titanium editions which came fairly loaded and would no doubt now be way below 50K.

Not sure about the trunk size, but I like the S5 in that price ballpark and it seems to fit all of the other criteria pretty well.

If you have to carry 4 people and that 4x4x.5 object, I think you're talking something bigger like a Suburban, Escalade, Excursion, maybe some minivans would do it with the third row folded, maybe a Flex or something similar. Also a pickup with crew cab like the Tundra, F150, Ram1500, etc. I'm having trouble coming up with a European import that has the space for this, maybe the Avant or BMW 5-series Touring (wagon) or the X6 but I'm not sure of the cargo space.
As far as midwest winters go, snow tires on any of the above are sufficient.

I think you're a little biased there Bob!

Pilot is a good vehicle. Family has had 3. Still has 2.

My wife is dimensionally challenged (better make the suggestions smaller then!). The thingy is actually 30" x 38" x 12". I thought the dimensions were off as this currently fits into the back of a Mazda 3...

I'm a fan of wagons. I'm not too sure what $50K US gets you now a days considering the market is quite different in the US compared to Canada for used cars but I'd definitely be looking an Audi S4 Avant.
