I'm interested. Can anybody give a detailed procedure? Will it make a lot of mess since the oil filter is located on top?

OCBen posted a very nice tutorial in March with excellent photos. Search under "DIY oil change". It was commented on 100 times.

Skyking, when are you going to do the first change? A lot of people say they do a very early oil change and see metal flecks or flakes. I'm thinking I might change mine when the car has around 1000 miles on it, then again at 2000.

I plan on doing mine at 750 miles and having Black Stone do an analysis.
The 09's have a 7.9 qt capacity vs the 08's 12 quarts.

OCBen does not do a 997.2 in that thread. I would like to know if anyone has done the oil change on the new motor.

Super easy. Much easier than on my 06. Raise it, place jackstands, remove drain plug, lower and let sit for 15 minutes while you're changing the filter. Buy a socket from auto store that fits the end of the cartridge cover, remove cartridge, use paper towel and remove the little oil at bottom. Insert the new cartridge, replace cover after you lubricated the rubber gasket ring, raise car, replace drain plug with the NEW o ring that is not included with the new filter. Dealer has torque settings for above. The real problem is finding 5-50 Mobil One that you may prefer for hot summer days at the track.

Whether you're doing a 997.1 or 997.2 it's essentially the same. With the oil cannister on top you don't necessarily make a mess as it will be drained out into the engine because of the way it is seated. It will actually be less messy than the 997.1

Just follow the usual torque values for the cannister and the aluminum drain. It's doubtful that you will find any sort of flakes in your new engines.

Question early oil change?

As noted above, I think the process is the same for the 997.2. Just don't forget that gasket!

I would prefer not to do a very early oil change if it isn't necessary, but several people in recent months have commented on the metal flakes in the oil at first (DIY) oil change, including, I think, OCBen in that tutorial.

Yeah, here's OCBen: ". . fine metal particles indicative of an engine undergoing the break-in process. Sure enough, I saw them. There they were as I shifted the oil back and forth in the plastic pan in direct sunlight."

(How much harm they might do I can't say. I've read that they can anneal or bond to moving parts, thereby changing tolerances. I'm sure I'm using the wrong terminology, but that's the message I got about less well-manufactured engines, i.e. Japanese motorcycle engines.)

Like I say, I would like to avoid the expense of multiple early oil changes. But as one of the guys said on one of the many threads on the subject of When to Change Your Oil, "Do what makes you feel good and you'll be happy."

So maybe Skyking will get to 750 before I do and let us know what the analysis shows!

Can anyone explain why the oil filter does not filter out any metal flakes?

Ok, so one needs oil, new oil filter, new drain plug washer.. and what else? A gasket for the filter canister?

Can someone compile a list of parts so when I go to the dealer I can just list off: here are the 3 parts I need.

OCBen, do you have an answer to vrnkc's question beyond making fun of him?

Well if you don't know, and he doesn't know, then I don't know of a better situation that deserves a little poking fun at.

It's not a legitimate question.

It's like asking "why doesn't a coffee filter filter out coffee grounds?"

Parts are really quite simple. The oil filter (paper) comes with a gasket. The aluminum drain plug could use another crushable aluminum washer. I also bought myself a spare (they're cheap) drain plug so that I can simply let it fall into the oil catch pan and I fish it out later. I wind up rotating plugs.

The oil filter/cartridge on the 2009 3.8L is from a V8 Cayanne if you have problems finding one.

Thanks for the replies.
I did my own oil change on the 08 C4s at 1000 miles and yes, it did make me feel better. Oil was clean but I just wanted to get any specks of metal out.
On the new car, with some of our members having significant oil usage, I want to do it earlier just to make sure any particles are removed. Same reason for having the oil analyzed. Just want to monitor what is happening in the engine.
Again, thanks for the comments.
