I'm considering a new 2008 C4S and was concerned as to whether there were any issues with peeling control switches as with my 06 CTT and some 06 Cayman S's...seems the rubberized soft touch coating does not hold up well, even if not abused. The Cayenne build date is 08/2005. Window controls, radio controls, eyeglass door on overhead console, even the button on the carbon fiber Tiptronic shifter. The C4S build date is 06 or 08 of 2007. I can't make out the exact month in the photo of the sticker. Either way...has this type of thing surfaced in any 977's...if so, has it been remedied on more recent models? Thanks!

I don't believe that Porsche has changed the 'slush' finish they use on those particular control surfaces. Personally, I have had no problem whatsoever with that. What I understand to be the problem has to do with makeup or body oils in the hands. This stuff is quite destructive to that finish and begins to tear it apart quickly.

No makeup here...and body oils on hands...who knows?...even the push in on/off radio dial/button is peeling from use, albeit a light tap, though many times...I feel the stuff is flawed to not hold up better...the shifter button finish is bubbling up and peeling away.

78k on my '05 and 48k on the CS. I have not experienced one issue like you are describing.

Yup ok here. Only thing that peeled off was the rubber sealer liner around the sunroof.

I've had an '07 Cayman S, an '06 911S and now have an '09 911S.
The Cayman had the problem you are talking about. The "black" wore off the A/C controls after only about 10k miles. I took it to the dealer and they switched the entire control panel for a new improved one that does not use the same material. The newer Caymans and 911s I've looked at have the new style. The '06 911 I had did not have the problem. You should be able to tell if the car has the new switches. The old ones have a much softer feel to them. I don't think an '08 911 would have the problem though. |

Have the local dealer do a PIWIS scan and check for over-revs... I believe they can print you a report. I do not remember the threshold for over-revs and warranty issues.
