Default Thinking of trading my 09 C2 for a 09C4S... Mistake?

Hello,

With all the deals to be had today, I regret that I purchased a car 6 months ago. I am thinking of swapping it for a new 09 C4s. I am trying to see how much my car would fetch upon trade-in. I have a 09 C2 manual with bose, pwr seat, nav, xm, self dim, htd seats, 2400 miles, clear bra. 10/10 condition. MSRP of 86,000. Anybody here have done it? I need some thoughts/advice. Thanks.

You're gonna take a five-figure bath on it. Why not hold on to this one, drive the **** out of it, and trade up when the next model refresh comes? Unless some axles, a few HP and an "S" badge are worth $15-20k depreciation plus the add'l cost of the 4S to you.

If you've got money to burn it's one thing , but I concur with number9ine.
With the current market for these cars you will get hosed.
What do you "have" to have that you can get from the C4S?

I agree. It will be an expensive change for you now. Your C2 is likely as fast as the heavier C4S anyway, and it appears to be nicely optioned. I suggest keeping your car and enjoying it.

Yes, it would be a mistake.

Just to play Devil's advocate... Would the deal really be that bad? Think of it this way... Yes, you'd be losing a ton of money on your car -- but you'd be getting a much better deal on the new one. So would it really be that much worse than if you had bought the C4S at the higher price to begin with? I'd be curious to see how it compares. No doubt, you'd be spending some money that most here think would be wasted, but now you've got me curious. Keep us posted.

If you are serious, go and put your car on cars.com and autotrader.com and in the Panorama mag/PCA site. Start out asking $80k and see what you can get.
Maybe you'll get lucky.
Heck, go to a dealer and see what they will do for you to "swap" the cars.

When did you get the car?

If you are not 100% satisfied with your C2 and have the $$$ to spend, you might be able to strike a very nice deal. You should pursue it.

If you find a dealer discounting his new one by 12-14%, plus amazing financing rates, the deal could be another once in a lifetime opportunity. However, the flip side of the transaction (your trade) will be an eye opener. Assume the MSRP list of $86K on your trade, and aggressive discounts on NEW ones of 12-14%, you are looking at net $74K to $76K new. Kick in a few bucks for depreciation and you are in the mid to upper $60s.

If you bought 6 months ago then you probably got 10% or more off like I did. Say you can get 15% off a car on the lot right now, you are only "saving" a tiny bit more on this new car than you saved on the "old" one. But I bet you are going to take a big hit on the depreciation of your car (maybe another 20% on what you paid). If you've moved from a warm climate to a place where you need AWD and this is your only car, I could see it. Otherwise, enjoy what you have.

I bought it last January 09. The deals out there just kept me thinking that if I upgrade now I maybe able to strike out a good deal but the trade-in value of my car might deter me from pursuing this. Thanks.

Interesting - but I would say -forgetaboutit. Go to a dealer to see what they will give you. Like others have said, the depreciation on these cars is eye opening-remember you will still pay TT&L on the new car. Unless there is some really compelling reason to trade, I would enjoy the C2, smile and keep moving.

Consider this. If the discount has improved 5% in 6 months, the trade-in is probably down 10% and then you have normal depreciation to factor in for another 20%. So yes, maybe you can get a 5% advantage, but that will be balanced by a much larger disadvantage. Only one way to find out and it's not at a forum - it's at the dealer. And if you don't like the trade figure he gives you, look to eBay for completed auctions to give you an idea of what buyers are actually willing to spend today for a car - it's pretty shocking.

to tell you the truth, I had thought about this as well, except going for the turbo cab. But, it lasted for a skinny minute!!! I assumed I would take a bath on the trade just like i did on the M6, 40% of MSRP on a 2 year old car with 26k on the clock! I just wanted to get rid of that car, too heavy, gas hog, oil burner, etc. Trust me, you have a wonderful car!

In my state (TN), you only pay sales tax on the difference...
